audry-auld-249x187Performing at Sopchoppy's Posh Java on Saturday, February 4 at 8pm is singer/songwriter Audrey Auld, originally from Tasmania, Australia.

“Devils are not the only thing to come from Tasmania.  Singer-songwriter Audrey Auld's heart is in Country, Folk and Americana music with a presence as big as The Outback,” reads her bio at Audreyauld.com.  “Her songs are the wry and poignant observations of a Tassie girl living in California and Nashville for the past eight years.”

“Audrey calls it ‘Music with the dirt left on.’ " (Bio, Audreyauld.com)

Audrey Auld, born in 1964, was raised in the bush in Tasmania, with no TV and no Pop radio, in a house filled with animals, siblings, books and live music.  She trained on a classical violin (including a stint with the Tasmanian Youth Orchestra), and studied jazz ballet.  Her dad’s jazz piano and her step-dad's Dixieland trumpet influenced her love of music.  Ayn Rand, Brahms, Satchmo and Peggy Lee were played in her home.

“The first time I ever heard country music was when my recently divorced mother and her girlfriends were having a party and were belting out ‘Stand by Your Man’.  Even at ten years of age I sensed some kind of irony.”  (Auldreyauld.com).

Her debut EP, Audrey, was released in 1997.  It offered four tracks of hillbilly, swing, torch and honky-tonk unlike anything released in Australia before.

“Mum and Dad didn’t want us to perceive music as wallpaper," said Auld. "They taught us to listen and enjoy, with an open heart and enquiring mind, to the layers of colour, emotion and dynamics in music."

Visit www.audreyauld.com for a full bio and to hear some of Auld’s music, which includes a number of CD’s and prestigious awards.  Auld has also contributed extensively to charitable projects that are a testament to her compassionate heart and willingness to embrace humanity and life. (Note by Debra E. Dix Bishop.)

“Audrey’s Australian roots have taken hold in American culture... One of the best entertainers plying the highways from Down Under to Scandinavia... And now she’s coming to Sopchoppy!  That’s just way cool,” writes singer/songwriter Grant Peeples.

Audrey lives in East Nashville with her husband, dogs, chickens and frogs, writing songs and touring.

“The beauty of Audrey's work is that she understands the power of simplicity.  Whether it be in a traditional country setting or on the more edgy tracks her voice stays honest and true." ~ Kieran Kane

“It’s one thing for singers to write beautifully and sing beautifully, but when they’re also funny, as in stand-up-comic funny, it makes going to their shows not only pleasurable but also memorable… How many times do you leave a concert and find yourself quoting lines the singer says in between the songs?  Such is the case with Tasmanian native Audrey Auld.” -- Dallas Morning News 2011
