NAMI Wakulla is offering – free of charge - a 12-week education program beginning July 8 for relatives of people who have been diagnosed with a serious mental illness.

The program, which will meet once a week at the NAMI Wakulla office in the South East Eye Center on Crawfordville Highway, is designed to help family members better understand mental illness and its effects on daily life.

“NAMI Wakulla is so glad it can offer people in Wakulla County the benefits of the Family-to-Family Program and let family members know they are not alone,” said Charlie Creel, president of NAMI Wakulla. “The support we have received in the past year since we organized had made a repeat of this program possible.”

The two-hour sessions will begin at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday nights and will continue until Sept. 23.

The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) has developed the program material through unrestricted grants from Bristol-Myers Squibb and Otsuka America Pharmaceutical, Inc.

Instructors of the Wakulla NAMI Family-to-Family program are trained NAMI members who have a family member with a mental illness.

All course material will be furnished free of charge.

Those who want to sign-up may call Wakulla NAMI’s helpline at 926-1033 for more information, or interested participants may come to the first meeting at 6:30 p.m. on July 8.
