The Varsity War Eagle Soccer Team is undefeated after the first three games of the year. On Saturday, November 14, WHS traveled south to take on the Port St. Joe Sharks. Under the unseasonably warm November sun, Wakulla jumped out to an early lead on a Steven Urling cross to co-captain, Rhett Harvey. Harvey's direct shot on goal scored in just the second minute of the game. WHS would go on to take multiple shots by Harvey, Wayne Murray and co-captain Gage Martin, while PSJHS's Reis Nelson took the only first half shot on goal against WHS goalie Cody James.
Going into the second half with a slim one goal lead, Wakulla quickly capitalized on an accurate throw in by Jeffrey Bryan to Liam Daniels who passed to Wayne Murray so precisely that Murray scored on a header. Even a Shark's fan in the stands was heard saying, 'that was beautiful'. Shark's goalie Austin Houze would fend off several sharp shots on goal from WHS players Morgan Henry, Josh Oliver, Ryan Leigh and Martin throughout the rest of play.
Finally in 75th minute of the game, Shark's Chase Watford scored their only goal on a throw in and lopsided shot that took a high bounce over WHS goalie Blake Howell's head. The game ended in a WHS Varsity victory of 2-1. Head Coach Bob Wallace summarized by saying, 'Even though we kept the ball on their end of the field almost all day, we certainly did not play our best.' Asst. Coach Don Gregg followed up with, 'We'll see you men at practice.'
The War Eagle JV Team, coached by Jim Posey and David Chadwell, took on the Shark's JV team at the conclusion of the Varsity game. The JV prevailed in a huge victory of 3-0, with goals scored by Colton Rudd and Johnny Piland (2).
Earlier in the week, the November 10 JV game was canceled due to weather conditions and on November 12, Varsity tied 4-4 against East Gadsden. The four goals scored in the November 12 game were by Wayne Murray and Gage Martin (3).

Top of Florida Wakulla Soccer Team has Undefeated Season
The Top of Florida (TOF) Wakulla Soccer team recently
ended its fall season undefeated. Head Coach Roy McCall said, "I
attribute the success of this Top of Florida Wakulla team to the high
level of skill, dedication, and enthusiasm that each player brought to
the team. In past seasons, TOF Wakulla teams have established a
reputation for dominance within the Tallahassee recreational leagues,
and this team has certainly lived up to that reputation." During the
eight week season, Wakulla outscored opponents 28-10, averaging 4 goals
per game.
The U15+ league is open all players ages 14-17, and many are
"TOF veterans" that provide a powerful core for the WHS regular season
teams. For more information on all age divisions and the TOF fall,

Wakulla High Boys Soccer Team Holds On to Season Opener
On Tuesday, November 9, 2009 the Wakulla High Boys Varsity Soccer Team held on to win their season opener against Florida High. Amid impending Tropical Storm Ida, and opening on the road, the soccer team stepped up to prevail 1-0 against a tough FSUS team.
The game, scheduled for 7pm, kicked off about two hours early to try to beat the incoming rain. Coach Wallace's squad, consisting of Ben Anderson, Matt Briggs, Jeffrey Bryan, Daniel Burse, Liam Daniels, Rhett Harvey, Wayne Murray, Blake Howell, Cody James, Ryan Leigh, Brandon Maloy, Gage Martin, Josh Oliver, Dustyn Robison, Steven Urling, D.J. Victor and short Morgan Henry and Conner Smith, who were committed to finishing out prior sports seasons, all looked lean and ready to play.
The defense, lead by Senior Daniels, cleared the ball strongly throughout the evening in a very physical game. "For the first game of the year, the boys looked pretty disciplined. Overall, I was pleased," said Head Coach Bob Wallace. Stepping up to the challenge of filling big gloves was Senior Howell, who took over goal keeper duties after four-year varsity player Matt Reich graduated last year. Howell saved several shots on goal, including one where he deflected and then crawled to slap the ball, preventing it from crossing the threshold of the goal line.
Finally, in the seventeenth minute of the second half, Senior Co-Captain Martin broke-away on a pass from Daniels and beat the FSUS keeper to the right corner of the net. Coming off a crazy 2009 season, where the WHS Varsity Boys Soccer program went 6-15-2, yet still managed to go further in the post season than they had in four years, Assistant Coach Don Gregg was quoted as saying, "We are already at one-sixth of last year's win total - way to start the season men." The JV team fell to FSUS just prior to the Varsity game by a narrow margin of 0-1.

Wakulla High's Lady War Eagles have dashed the hopes of Gulf Breeze High's post-season dreams in all of the past three times they've met, but the Dolphins were having no more of it. The regional semi-final game, which was postponed due to weather from Tuesday, 11/10 to Thursday, 11/12, would draw WHS's 2009 volleyball season to a close.
Wakulla has made the regional playoffs 13 consecutive years, three of those advancing at the expense of Gulf Breeze. This year, however, Wakulla couldn't fight the preparation, determination and the home court advantage of GBH. The Lady Eagles were never really in the match, struggling with defensive and offensive errors. They surrendered large leads early in both games one and two; deficits that were never to be overcome. Wakulla fell 25-14 and 25-15 in the first two games.
In the final set, Head Coach Erica Bunch made adjustments to better keep up with Gulf Breeze, never trailing by more than five points. Ultimately, Wakulla lost 25-21 in game three. Bunch ended the post-season with, "We really hoped this was the year, we've got some outstanding seniors, but it wasn't meant to be. Wakulla is rich in volleyball tradition; we'll regroup and be back next year."

Wakulla won three matches in a row against Washington with scores of 25-12, 25-22, and 25-22. The game against Gulf Breeze was originally scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 10, but with Ida on the loose in the Pensacola area it was postponed until Thursday.

WHS Volleyball Team are Class 4A District 2 Champions
The Wakulla High Lady War Eagles Volleyball Team has been District 2 Champions in Class 4A since they moved up to that class in 2005. 2009 will be no exception to the title streak. On October 29th, the squad traveled early to Godby so they could observe the Class 4A District 2 playoff game happening prior to their scheduled championship game. In a match that arguably belonged to Godby, who has shown much improvement and had the home court advantage, Wakulla watched the Cougars fall 3-2 to the Rutherford Rams.
About half way through game five, Head Coach Erica Bunch rallied her girls to go outside the gym to run off the stiffness of watching a five game battle for second place, and for an intensity pep-talk. 'When we've lacked something this year, it’s been intensity," said Bunch. 'We have the overall talent, the drive, the support. It is individual game intensity and the discipline to not play down that is our nemesis.' Whatever Bunch said to her team Thursday night worked. The Lady War Eagles have dominated their district during regular season play, going 4-0 this year; the championship match was no exception.
With WHS Principle Mike Crouch and many other avid fans in attendance, and with Godby dismissed by Rutherford, Wakulla took over the feeling of the home court advantage. Bunch and Asst. Coach Lawhon opened with their normal rotation: Senior starters Kristin Mathers, Artigua Kilpatrick, Summer Stokley and Jasmine Green, and Junior starters Tara Vatter, Sarah Roberts, Logan Harvey and Kara Smith. Season-long injured Varsity player Lindsey Rudd, recovering from torn ACL surgery, continues to faithfully travel with her teammates to keep stats and encourage them at every opportunity.
Playing smart, especially on defense, Wakulla handily took game one with a 25-11 victory. Continuing to dominate in game two, Bunch began to make substitutions. Along for the post-season experience and providing depth are former JV players Chelsea Carroll, Natalie Crum, Ashley Roberts and Emily Haley. The Lady War Eagles maintained their lead and won game two with a 25-14 margin. In game three, the entire second string got the call to start. The four JV players, supplemented by three Varsity players, took on the Rams for the potential championship game. As one would expect, that game's score was much closer. While leading, it was a narrow margin, and at 20-18, Bunch put Senior Middle Stokley in to help sure up the win. Wakulla ended with a 25-21 victory to bring home the District 2, Class 4A trophy.
Wakulla now advances to the Regional Quarterfinals. We will host Washington (Pensacola) on Wednesday, November 4th, 2009 at 7pm at the WHS gymnasium. Fans are encouraged to come out and support the team, as the competition heats up in the race to the State Title. The winner of Wednesday's game will advance to the Regional Semifinals on November 10th.
Wakulla High Volleyball Team Celebrates Its Seniors on Senior Night
The 2009 Wakulla High School Varsity Volleyball team hosted their annual Senior Night this past Tuesday evening, October 20, prior to their final home game against Maclay. In what is fast becoming a WHS tradition, each Senior member of the team was presented with flowers by Head Coach Erica Bunch and Assistant Coach Carey Lawhon as the crowd looked on. The girls were escorted by their parents to the center of the court as the announcer shared each player's favorite memories from their years on the team, and their future plans. (Seniors pictured at right (L to R): Kristin Mathers, Crystal Chadwell, Summer Stokley, Artigua Kilpatrick, and Jasmine Green)
#23 Jasmine Green
Jasmine is the daughter of James and Betty Green. She was escorted by her father, James. Jasmine is a 4 year volleyball player, with 3 years on Varsity. Jasmine wants to go to college to become a sports medic. Her favorite memories of volleyball are times spent with the "Fam of 5". She wants the audience to realize that while she'll be gone, Kara will still be here next year but mostly to thank you for coming and she hopes you enjoy the game.
#21 Artigua Kilpatrick
Artigua is the daughter of Antonio and Andrea Kilpatrick. She was escorted by both her parents. Artigua, affectionately known as "T", is a 2 year volleyball player, both of which have been on Varsity. She was named Honorable Mention to All Big Bend her first year playing volleyball. Her senior classmates voted her and her brother, "T-Man", as Most Athletic Male and Female for the Class of 2010. She plans to go to college and major in either graphic design or a medical field. A formidable basketball and softball player as well, "T" hopes to attend college on an athletic scholarship. Her favorite volleyball memories are times traveling with the "Fam 5". She would like to thank her parents for pushing her all these years to work hard and accomplish her goals.
#13 Summer Stokley
Summer is the daughter of Taff and Geneva Stokley. She was escorted by both parents. Summer is a 3 year volleyball player, all of them on varsity. Summer desires to play college volleyball while pursuing a law degree. Her favorite volleyball memories were made while playing at Disney's Wide World of Sports and in New Orleans during club season. She wants to publicly thank Coach Erica for everything she has done for her. To quote Summer, "Coach, you're the best and I love you!"
#11 Crystal Chadwell
Crystal is the daughter of David and Ann Chadwell. She was escorted by both parents. Crystal has played volleyball all 4 years in high school, 3 of which have been on Varsity. Crystal seeks to play volleyball in college while majoring in sports medicine. You'll need to ask Crystal the details on her favorite volleyball memories because they are cryptically entitled "Creature Walks in the Hotel" and "The Burd Game". Crystal wants to wish her best friend Kara the greatest of luck next year, to tell the "Fam of 5" she will miss them, and to say thanks to Coach.
#6 Kristin Mathers
Kristin is the daughter of Sherry Dudley. She was escorted by her mother. Kristin has a distinguished 3 year Varsity volleyball career at Wakulla High. She was named 2nd Team All Big Bend her sophomore year and 1st Team All Big Bend her junior year. Just last night (Oct. 19) she was nominated by her coaching peers for Class 4A State Player of the Year and was also recommended to play on this region's end of the season All-Star team. Kristin plans to go to college and major in architecture. Her favorite volleyball memories are of witnessing Artigua as she watched the "Hair Dance", pondering the "door hanging mystery" and just hanging out with the girls. Kristin wants the audience to know that she is going to specifically miss the "Fam of 5" and that although it hasn't been proven, she's sure she and Artigua are related somehow.
The 2009 WHS Varsity Volleyball team would like to thank everyone for coming out to support WHS Volleyball. Coach Erica Bunch was wished good luck in the District Playoffs that start next week, and it was announced that Bunch was recently nominated as the state's AA Coach of the Year. She was also recommended to coach the end-of-the-season All-Star team for this region.

The RMS Bears dropped their second game of the season to the visiting Tigers from Quincy, falling 22-0. The Bears offensive woes continued, which were accentuated by penalties and miscues. The loss drops Riversprings record to 4-2 on the season. “We seemed to still be feeling the effects of losing to Marianna last week,” Coach Joey Jacobs said.
RMS next game will be on Tuesday, October 20, at Taylor County. “Hopefully, we can go out and execute, and put together a solid game against Taylor. We would love a win going into our Bowl Game on the 29th,” said Jacobs. The Bears finished 2nd place on their side of the conference, and await the winner of the Wakulla Middle / Jefferson County game to see who they will face. If WMS wins the game, the Bears will face WMS again at WHS. If Jefferson County wins, the Bears will have to face Taylor County again in Perry.

After five weeks of being on the road, the Lady War Eagles were back in top form at home on Thursday, October 8, 2009 as they faced off with Lincoln High School for the first time this year. Head Coach Erica Bunch looked relaxed all night as she took on her lifelong volleyball mentor, Jose Morales and his Varisty Trojans.
It was Wakulla who would control the court all night. Even when the games got close, there never seemed to be a question that the home team would prevail. The crowd was enthusiastic and the student fans kept the team smiling all night. The Trojans didn't go down easy, they fought for every point, but Wakulla never really faltered and came out on top.
Leading the way were Senior outside hitter Kristin Mathers who capitalized on accurate sets from all over the court, primarily from Junior setter Tara Vatter. Mathers always steps up at home and Thursday night was no different. She was near perfect all over the court raking in 16 kills, 12 digs, 3 blocks and 3 aces. Vatter had a phenomenal 55 assists and lead the team in aces with 5.
The middles were once again prominent with Senior Artigua Kilpatrick tallying 5 kills, 8 blocks and 3 aces while Senior Summer Stokley had 3 kills and 6 blocks. Senior Crystal Chadwell and Junior Logan Harvey tied for third in kills with 4 each. Harvey also had 3 blocks while Chadwell was in on 2. Libero Sarah Roberts had a good read on defense all night and ended with 10 digs. Rounding out the defense for the Lady Eagles were Freshman Natalie Crum with 7 digs and Senior Jasmine Green with 5.
The game scores were 25-22, 25-14 and 27-25. The Lady War Eagles will gladly stay home all next week and face their two district foes for the second time each. Rutherford on October 13 and Godby on October 15.
The JV team continues to improve as they battle back from injuries. They fell 2-0 to Lincoln's JV team in close games.

Riversprings Bears Suffer First Loss of Season Against Marianna
The Riversprings Bears suffered their first setback of the season on Tuesday night, falling to the Marianna Bullpups 44-8. “We ran into a buzz saw,” Coach Joey Jacobs commented. “Marianna was as good as advertised. We beat them 30-8 at their place last year, and they came into our house wanting to exact revenge for that loss.” The Bears could never sustain any offensive momentum, and the defense could never find an answer for Marianna’s three headed monster, running backs McAroy, Wooden, and Knowles.
On offense, Riversprings could never get the running game going. After being gashed last season by RMS backs Dillon Norman, Demetrius Lindsey, and Mikal Cromartie, the Bullpups seemed determined to stop the RMS running attack. Marianna held RMS to 0 total yards rushing. The Bears would have had negative rushing yards if not for a couple of runs by 6th grade running back Monterious Loggins.
Monterious Loggins
James Douin
Jordan Franks
Josh Vick
With the ground game stalled, RMS took to the air. Quarterback James Douin completed 5 of 13 passes for 102 yards and a touchdown. His main target was Receiver Jordan Franks, who caught 3 passes for 92 yards and a touchdown. Riversprings seemed to have positioned themselves to score early in the game with a trick play, which found Jordan Franks hitting James Douin with a 31 yard pass that put them deep into Bullpup territory. The opportunity was lost however, when a Marianna defensive end came untouched and sacked Douin, forcing a fumble which was recovered by Marianna.
Defensively, the Bears were led by linebacker Josh Vick. Vick finished the night with 7 tackles, 2 assists, and 1 tackle for loss.
With the loss to Marianna, RMS will finish in second place on their side of the Big Bend Conference. The Bears now wait to see who finishes second on the other side of the conference to determine who they will play in the bowl game. The Bears will be in action again on Tuesday, October 13, against Quincy. The game will be RMS’ final home game of the season, and will be held at WHS at 6:00 p.m.

Riversprings Bears Shutout Havana 30 - 0 in First Home Game
The Riversprings Middle School football team finally played a home game this season, and they did not disappoint the home crowd, defeating Havana 30 – 0. The scoring started on the Bears first drive of the night, when quarterback James Douin found Nahriek Dorsey with a 19 yard touchdown pass. As it turns out, Douin was just getting warmed up. He threw two more TD tosses to Jordan Franks. The first was a 20 yard pass, and the second was an impressive 11 yard pass while shedding Havana defenders. RMS’ final score came on a 3 yard touchdown run by Douin. Running Back Micah Gray also had a productive night, averaging nearly 12 yards per carry.

The RMS defense was excellent, as usual. Their shutout of Havana was the 3rd in a row for the defense and the 14th straight quarter holding opponents scoreless. Brandon Trussell led the defensive effort, tallying 7 tackles and 1 assist, with 4 tackles for loss. Keith Gavin chipped in 4 tackles, 3 assists, with 1 TFL. Line backer Josh Vick had another great night, as he was active in disrupting the Havana backfield for 2 TFL’s, a quarterback sack, and a fumble recovery. Gage Chance and Daniel Veaudry produced big hits in the game that forced fumbles respectively. Monterious Loggins had a fumble recovery, and Micah Gray picked off a Havana pass and returned it 38 yards to set up a RMS touchdown.

“Not too many people would have predicted us to be 4-0,” Coach Joey Jacobs said. “Goliath is coming to town Tuesday,” he added, in reference to the October 6th game against unbeaten Marianna. According to Jacobs, “They were pretty much the favorite in the conference coming into the season. They return a couple of great running backs in McAroy and Wooden, who rushed for nearly 400 yards combined against Havana. We’re going to have our work cut out for us.”
The Bears play the Marianna Bullpups on Tuesday, October 6th at 7:00 p.m. at WHS.

Wakulla Middle School Improves Record with Second Win
The WMS Wildcats defeated Florida High on Tuesday night, September 29, 2009 by a score of 28 to 14. A solid first half produced most of the Wildcat’s scoring. JaShawn Robinson lead the offense with 125 yards rushing. Robinson scored the first of Wakulla’s points on an end run of 56 yards. Elijah Yeboah followed suit with a pass reception for a score covering another 48 yards.
One of the second half highlights was a pass interception by Patrick Harvey. Harvey grabbed a screen pass and returned it 52 yards for Wakulla's only second half score. The offensive line, lead by Lance Barwick, Hunter Hurst, Ray Sapp, Cole Henderson, Gage Pitman, Daniel Stewart and Drew Keith provided the holes for JaShawn Robinson and Dustin Lynch.

As always the WMS defense was stellar holding Florida High to 97 total yards of offense. The interior defensive linemen, Bradley Brown and Hunter Hurst, shut down Florida High’s inside and counter plays allowing Wildcat defensive ends Drew Keith and Kyler Woodward (pictured at left) to apply pressure in the opponents offensive backfield. As always defense wins games. Every week the WMS defense shows up to play, holding opponents to one or two big plays a game.
On Thursday, October 8th the Wildcats go to Taylor County to take on the Bull Pups; a must win for WMS to stay in the Big Bend Conference title chase. The Wildcats have held the Big Bend Conference Champ for the past two seasons.

We would like to introduce the 2009 Riversprings Middle School Cheerleaders. These girls have been working overtime with many routines, stunt sequences, and cheers to support their football team. During the summer, they attended practice several days during the week and attended two separate summer camps that focused on routine material as well as advanced stunt work.
The girls are excited about showing their spirit for the teams and performing at games. They have also been involved in fundraisers to help fund stunt mats. We are looking forward to an awesome year of cheerleading and to expanding our dance routines and stunt sequences to more advanced levels. These girls have put their heart into showing a wonderful performance. I am truly proud of this squad for their motivation to show their spirit and skills.
Riversprings Middle School Cheerleaders are led by Coach Catherine H. Small and newly appointed Volunteer Athletic Assistant Coach Vannessa Harris. Ms. Vannessa Harris brings to the squad an experienced view of stunting, advanced dance technique, and transitions within routines. Riversprings Continues Winning Streak by Defeating Wakulla Middle in Sandgnat Slobberknocker
The 10th annual “Sandgnat Slobberknocker” for the Wakulla County Championship proved to be a dramatic and defensive battle. Both Riversprings and Wakulla Middle came into the contest undefeated, but it was the Bears of RMS that kept up their winning ways, defeating the Wildcats 12-0, and running their 2009 season record to 3-0. “Our kids had a lot to prove,” said Coach Joey Jacobs. “Pretty much everybody thought we would lose most of our games this year, since we lost so much talent from last year, but our kids didn’t allow that to define them.” The Bears had a little extra motivation, too. “Riversprings won the county championship game last year, but some WMS kids were wearing shirts that declared WMS the 2008 county champs," added Jacobs. "Our boys took that as a personal insult, and they were determined to win tonight.”
The Bear offense got off to a slow start in the game, and found it difficult to move the ball on the ground against the Wildcats. With the ground game stalled, 8th grade quarterback James Douin got the offense moving through the air with timely passes that extended drives. A couple of big passes from Douin to Jordan Franks set up a scoring opportunity for the Bears inside the WMS 10 yard line. Douin scored the first touchdown of the night on a 5 yard TD run in the 2nd quarter. The Bears scored an insurance touchdown via a 35 yard TD pass from Douin to Brandon Trussel. The Bears also picked up crucial yards on the ground during the final scoring drive on the legs of 7th grade running back Josh Walker.

The RMS defense proved to be the difference maker once again for Riversprings. The Wildcats failed to mount any serious scoring drive against the Bears. The defense was led by James Douin and Keith Gavin, who had 7 and 6 tackles respectively. Defensive Ends Chris Paris and David Sloan also carried the defensive effort by flawlessly executing their responsibilities. Defensive lineman Cary Thornton provided a spark for the defense as well. “We had an overall dominating defensive performance against the Wildcats, holding them scoreless for the first time ever in the series,” said Defensive Coordinator Louis Hernandez. This was the first shutout ever in the history of the series for either team.

The Bears will be back in action again on October 1st, when they take on the Havana Bears in the first home contest of the year for Riversprings. The game will be at 6:00 p.m. at J.D. Jones Field at Reynolds Stadium.
