From the Publisher:
Dear Readers,
Well, it looks like we dodged a couple of bullets this week, even though Gustav caused a little inconvenience for those who live in coastal Wakulla County. Several residents spent Labor Day "laboring" to clean up the seaweed and debris that was left behind by a higher than usual tidal surge. According to the latest on Hanna sent to us by Wakulla County Emergency Management Director Scott Nelson, it looks like it may be heading on to the Carolinas. I don't wish the storm on anybody, but we sure don't need it here. We do need to keep an eye on Tropical Storm Ike as it shows the most promise of going out into the Gulf.
Congratulations to Henry "Buddy" Wells and Alan Brock for making it to the General Election as the Democratic candidates for their respective offices. They both ran good campaigns. And to those of you who did not make it through the first round, you should all feel good about the job you did as well. The next eight weeks will be supercharged, I'm sure, as all the candidates count down to election day. Which leads me to my next subject.
We have made the decision to not accept any more negative letters to the editor regarding candidates for office from now until the election. We would much rather see our readers write letters of endorsement for those candidates they support; tell us why they should be elected; what they stand for; and what positive attributes they will bring to their office if elected. Many of you will not agree with this stance, and we'll probably get some interesting comments on our decision, but at the end of the day, we need to be able to sleep soundly and feel like we made the right choice for our site.
VolunteerWAKULLA will be hosting their Volunteer Fair and Cookie Bake-Off this Saturday at the Extension Office (or Livestock Pavilion, as us old-timers call it) on Cedar Avenue in Crawfordville. Local organizations will have booths set up so that you can sign up to volunteer if you are able to do so, and you can try out what are sure to be some excellent cookies while you check it all out. The event will run from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
A Baseball and Fastpitch Clinic will be held this Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Wakulla High School. The proceeds will benefit Jenna Strickland, a little girl who is dealing with some pretty serious heart issues. She is in need of another costly surgery, and the funds raised at the clinic will help the family with the expenses. Come out, improve your baseball skills, and help this little girl at the same time.
Coastal Optimist members are selling tickets for their 2008 Fashion Extravaganza to be held on the evening of Friday, October 3 at the Bistro at Wildwood. Tickets are $40 per person, and only 150 will be sold. All proceeds will benefit the youth of Wakulla County, so get your tickets early before they are sold out. See our link below for more information.
If you are a yard sale fanatic, check out our link on the lefthand side of the site to see where to go for the best deals this weekend. There will be a community-wide yard sale at the Wakulla County Health Department this Saturday from 8 to 1. If you choose to, you can bring your own table and set up a spot.
Have a good week, and continue to keep your eye on Ike.
Sincerely,
Mary Katherine Westmark
Publisher, Wakulla.com

Alan Brock for County Commission District 1
If we want Wakulla County to provide the resources that we expect from our community, it needs to be more than a bedroom community for our neighbor to the north; we must be able to live, work, and play here.
We need new leadership, open to creative and innovative new ideas. We need leadership that is open and accessible. Elect someone who will work for you, by working with you!
Elect Alan Brock for District 1 Wakulla County Commissioner.
