From the Publisher:
Dear Readers,
I hope you have had a great week; it's been a busy one for us! My husband was out of town for a few days, and I've once again gained major admiration for all those single parents out there. Needless to say, we're looking forward to the weekend.
Sports are back in swing again; check out all the articles below to see how your favorite teams are doing. Riversprings continues their winning streak by defeating both NFC and Chiles, and the Wakulla High varsity football team put a whipping on Rickards last Friday night, defeating them 19 - 0 at Gene Cox Stadium in Tallahassee. Our article about that game will be on later today.
Couple of things going on this weekend: FWMA will host their annual Yard Sale in Hudson Park on Friday and Saturday, from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. each day. Come out and support the association; they really need the help this year due to the fire that destroyed Director Chris Beatty's home on Sept. 5. All funds earned will go to help the injured and orphaned animals. If you have good, sellable items you would like to donate, you can drop them off at Hudson Park this evening after 5:00. I'll be there Friday; come by, do some shopping, and say hello!
CHAT (Citizens for Humane Treatment of Animals) is having their Homecoming Celebration at the Wakulla County Animal Shelter on Oak Street this Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. There will be all sorts of free activities going on, including pony rides, hot dogs and sodas for all, free balloons, educational materials, a teddy bear hospital to repair stuffed toys that need mending, and educational literature. The Wakulla County Public Library will have a booth, t-shirts will be for sale, and photos which can taken with your pet or on a pony will be available for a nominal fee. There will be raffle items given away every half hour, starting at 10:30 am. It should be lots of fun; drop by after you visit the yard sale!
John Shuff, construction manager for the Old Wakulla County Courthouse Renovation Project, needs your help. He is looking for old interior photographs of the courthouse that show the fireplaces that used to exist in the building. His plan is to rebuild the fireplaces so that the courthouse will look as much like it originally did as possible. The state will not approve the reconstruction of these fireplaces until John can show proof through pictures that they actually existed. He has exterior photos that show the chimneys, but really needs interior pics. I've talked to several older residents of the community who say they vividly remember the fireplaces, but no one seems to have any photos. If you can help John out, please call the Chamber of Commerce office at 926-1848 and speak to Petra Shuff.
The Paulette Family is gearing up for their annual family-friendly Free Haunted House held every year at their home the weekend prior to Halloween. I went for the first time ever last year, and it's really a production! It's a lot of fun, and a really unique community event. They are in need of sponsors, both in-kind and monetary, to help put on this year's event. The family usually barely breaks even moneywise, but they continue to do it each year because they enjoy it so much. Please help them out if you can.
Well, I'm sure I've missed something, but hopefully you can get all the info you need about what's going on in the links below. Have a great weekend!
Sincerely,
Mary Katherine Westmark
