Selling Wakulla County Homes every Day!

From the Publisher:

Dear Readers,

I hope you all are having a good week! It's hard to believe Easter is this Sunday, and we just celebrated St. Patrick's Day this past Tuesday! Mary Updegraff wrote an interesting column about the "uniqueness" of our early Easter, and it's definitely worth reading. I've really never been sure how the date for Easter was determined, and Mary explains it all in her article.

Our family had some excitement last week as we experienced a small housefire on the night of Tuesday, March 11. Our hot water heater caught on fire, burning the closet it was encased in, the floor and trusses underneath the closet, and part of the landing in the stairwell leading up to our bedroom. All is okay; nobody hurt and no possessions lost (except for a pair of prized Panacea Nikes), but it was a real learning experience for us. We were the "poster family" of how not to be prepared. Our verbal discussion with the kids had always been "get out of the house as quickly as possible and run across the street", which is okay, unless the exits are impassable. We had smoke detectors in the house, but the batteries were extremely low, which was not any help to us at all. I now realize first-hand why it's important to have a detailed plan; one that everyone in the family understands. We are going to make sure we have rope ladders in case we can't get down the stairs (we live on stilts), and make sure we know how to use them. The firefighters suggested changing smoke detector batteries every time the time changes, so we will also make sure we follow that rule from now on. It's one of those things you just don't think will ever happen, but now I know that's not the case. So, BE PREPARED!

I also want to say thanks again to all the Wakulla County firefighters, both paid and volunteer, for their quick response and professional behavior. They were great, as were the WCSO officers who came out to the scene. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

The 2nd Annual Green Living and Energy Expo will be held this Saturday, March 22, at Riversprings Middle School. It starts at 9:00 a.m. and continues until 4:00 p.m., and promises to be a great event. There are all sorts of seminars and classes scheduled for both adults and kids, and vendors will have booths and tables set up to peruse as well. Check out all the links below pertaining to the different children's activities, etc. and make sure you bring your entire family out for the day. The Wakulla News has worked hard to prepare the special Green Living & Energy Expo section that came out in this week's edition, so take some time and check it out before Saturday.

The Parks and Rec Dept. is hosting their annual Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday in Crawfordville. Registration will be held at Hudson Park at 10:00 a.m., followed by the actual egg hunt over at Azalea Park at 11:00. Bring the kids out for some good, old-fashioned Easter fun, and don't forget the camera for all those great photo ops!

Pioneer Baptist Church is also hosting a community-wide egg hunt beginning at 2:00 p.m. It will be held at the church on Spring Creek Highway; see the link below under Church News for more specifics.

There are also several Easter Sunrise Services being held on Sunday; one at the Fort San Marcos de Apalache in St. Marks, and another at Shell Point Beach. The links below give all the times, etc.

Congratulations to Lauren Gentry who won "Best of Show" at the WHS Student Art Exhibit currently going on at the Wakulla Welcome Center in Panacea. Local photographer Joe Bonislawsky took some really nice pictures of the artwork; you can see them in our photo gallery link below. I am going to make sure I get by there to see the actual work itself; there are some extremely talented students at Wakulla High! I'm not totally sure on this, but I think the work will be up until mid April or so.

Well, have a great Easter weekend, and remember, it's Teacher Planning Day for Wakulla schools this Friday, so the kids have the day off.

Sincerely,

Mary Katherine Westmark
