From the Publisher:

Dear Readers,

Hope you've got your long underwear handy, because it's going to get COLD tonight! A hard freeze watch is in effect, so remember to drip your water so you won't wake up to busted pipes in the morning.

The arrival of the whooping cranes in St. Marks has been postponed again, according to the early morning WCTV news. I called the St. Marks Refuge to make sure, and they said it had definitely been cancelled until a later date due to the cold weather. So, keep checking back and we'll let you know when the event is going to happen. According to the Refuge, it will eventually happen; it's just a matter of when.

Saturday brings the annual Arbor Day Celebration at Hudson Park in Crawfordville from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The weather should be a little warmer by then, so bundle up and come out for this wonderful event. There will be all sorts of activities, and lots of free trees will be given away to participants. There will be food, children's activities, and entertainment as well, and I'm sure hot coffee will be on site. Make sure you come by; you'll be glad you did, and you'll give a tree a good home!

Another event going on this Saturday is the Sign Dedication Ceremony for the Great Birding Trail at the St. Marks Wildlife Refuge. The event begins at 9:00 a.m. with activities and tours, with the actual sign dedication taking place at 1:00 p.m. The sign installations should be completed by early next year and will help bird watchers find the designated sites throughout the Panhandle. Gateway sites at St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge, near Tallahassee, and Big Lagoon State Park, in Pensacola, provide extensive trail-related resources, with loaner optics available on site. They also act as hubs of regional birding information. This should be a fun event for the family, so come out and take one of the birding hike tours.

Trying to quit smoking? Have I got a deal for you! Sign up to participate in the Wakulla County Health Department's "Quit and Win" program and you could win some big prizes! Look for our link below to download and print the registration form. You can also register at the booth that will be set up at the Rotary Valentines Celebration at Hudson Park on February 14th.

Speaking of the Valentines Celebration, this year's event, hosted by the Rotary Club of Wakulla County, will be held on Valentine's Day itself, which makes it even more special. The festival should be lots of fun; there will be breakfast at 8:00 a.m.; the parade at 10:00 a.m., then games, entertainment, food, arts and crafts, and kid's activities in Hudson Park until 4:00 p.m. This year, “Cowboy Attractions” will be providing the games and kid’s activities. You can get out your ten gallon hats and spurs and take a wild ride on the mechanical bull, test your bravery and agility by climbing the giant rock wall, or do some high flying on the Euro Bungee! You can join your friends in a game of Mini-Striker, and there will also be pony rides and an inflatable slide and obstacle course for the younger set, as well as fake tattoos.

The activities will culminate at 3:00 p.m. with the announcement of the winner of the $1000 Winn-Dixie Shopping Spree raffle! Tickets for the raffle ($1 each) will be available for purchase throughout the day, and can also be purchased ahead of time from any Rotary member. Rotary members will also be selling tickets during the evenings at Winn-Dixie in Crawfordville; look for their table just inside the door.

The WCSO is looking for a missing juvenile; Stephanie Vautier, a 16 year old white female weighing 145 lbs., with black hair and brown eyes. She is suspected to be with a 17 year old male named Leroy McCambry, and is thought to be in the Brittany Estates area of Leon County (I think that's off Highway 20 West). Please check out the link below to see if you can help. -> Wakulla County Sheriff's Office Website.

Also, we are offering free Wakulla.com email addresses to anybody who would like to have one. If interested, simply email me at mkwestmark@wakulla.com and you too can sport a wakulla.com email!

Have a nice weekend, and a good Martin Luther King, Jr. day this Monday. Stay warm!!!
