Selling Wakulla County Homes every Day!

From the Publisher:

Dear Readers,

Hello all! I hope you are having a great week so far; the weather has been amazing these past few days! I took the kids to Mashes Sands Beach this past Sunday afternoon to take a few pictures, and it was absolutely gorgeous. Apparently a lot of people agreed, because there were quite a few of us down there just enjoying the sand between our toes. The water is really pretty this time of year; so clear. I didn't think I was ever going to tear my kids away. Talk about spring fever...

One last reminder that the 10th Annual Rotary Valentines Day Celebration is this Saturday, February 9, at Hudson Park in Crawfordville. It may not be too late to enter your parade entry (sorry Brian!); see our link below for details. Support the Rotary club and be a participant! Check out the links below for more details about the event and about what Rotary does for Wakulla County - Best Western NASCAR car in the parade!.

There is another festival going on this weekend here in Wakulla County; the First Annual Stone Age and Primitive Art Festival at Ochlockonee River State Park (Google Map). It actually starts on Friday, and continues through the weekend. It sounds really interesting; there will be “hands-on” learning, as experts demonstrate techniques that were used thousands of years ago in day to day life. Visitors will also see projectile point fashioning, also known as flint-knapping which is the art of chipping stone into tools, bow and arrow construction, basket weaving, early pottery methods and more. The only entry fee is the normal park entrance fee of $3 per car, so take the kids and go check it out!

We are currently conducting a poll on Wakulla.com to get a feel for how residents feel about recycling in Wakulla County, and how much of it is actually going on. I think many people would recycle if there was a more convenient way to get it to the landfill, such as curbside service, and hopefully the poll results will yield some positive results. We will continue to run it for another week or so; it can be accessed on the lefthand side of the site.

Let me tell you, if you are ready to kick the smoking habit, now is definitely the time in Wakulla County. The Quit and Win campaign will help you break the habit, and you can win some great cash prizes in the process, including $500! The event kicks off on February 10, and is being sponsored by the Wakulla County Health Care Task Force and the Wakulla County Health Department, as well as other local health care providers and businesses. You can download the registration form here on Wakulla.com, or you can pick it up at the library, health department, and other local health providers. It must be turned in by February 9. Just mail it in to the address given in the article below, or drop it off at the "Quit and Win" booth at the Rotary Valentines Celebration on February 9. There are quite a few informative articles about the benefits of quitting, etc. on the site right now, so check out the links below to help you get motivated.

In addition, the Wakulla County Health Department will be offering a series of "Quit Smoking NOW! classes on Wednesday evenings during February and March. Check out our link below under Health and Fitness for more information about registering.

A note to all of you out there who like to plan ahead: we've updated our Community Calendars through May of 2008, so you can go ahead and begin making your plans for the spring and early summer. If you see something we missed, please drop us a note and let us know.

Finally, thanks to everyone who participated in our Parent/Community Underage Drinking Survey. We had almost 300 responses, and we really appreciate your help. The Wakulla County Coalition for Youth will be using the results to determine what types of programs may be beneficial to the community regarding underage drinking. Again, thanks for your help with this important project!

Once again, the weather is predicted to be in the upper 60's with clear sunny skies all weekend, so get out there and enjoy Wakulla County! I hope to see you bright and early at the Rotary Valentines Celebration Breakfast in the Park (8:00 a.m., to be exact!). We'll have a nice, hot cup of coffee waiting for you, I promise!

Sincerely,

Mary Katherine Westmark
Publisher, Wakulla.com

P.S. Don't forget to send us your birth, birthday, wedding and engagement announcements to us at This email address is being protected from spam bots, you need Javascript enabled to view it , and include a picture or two if you'd like! They are always free on Wakulla.com!
