From the Publisher:

Dear Readers,

Wow; it's another busy weekend here in Wakulla County! There's no way you can do it all (unless you're Santa himself), so you'll just have to pick and choose what interests you the most.

Thursday evening, Dec. 11, the Wakulla Professional Business Women will host "An Evening of Holiday Music" at the WHS Auditorium starting at 7:00 p.m. Come hear local musicians Jerry Evans, Glenn Bostic, Lindsay Evans, and other special guests perform the music of the season to get you into the holiday spirit. Tickets are $12 each.

There are several events happening on Friday, Dec. 12, including the popular Christmas in the Park at Azalea Park in Crawfordville. The event begins at 5:00 p.m., and Santa and Mrs. Claus, along with their elves, will arrive in a horse drawn carriage just after dark. There will be games, prizes, food, and entertainment for the family. The WCSO Volunteers host the event, and it's always lots of fun for the kids. Several large items will be given away, so come out and join in the fun!

Another holiday happening on Friday night is the 2nd annual St. Marks Holiday Golf Cart Parade. Lineup will begin at 6:30 at the St. Marks River Cantina, and the parade will begin at 6:30 with a route that winds around the town of St. Marks. It should be a hoot, so plan to come out, get a comfy seat, and check out the carts. The St. Marks crew is pretty creative, so I'm sure it will be a fun evening.

The last thing I know of on Friday night is the WHS Dramatis Personae Annual Winter Talent Show, beginning at 8:00 p.m. in the WHS auditorium. The show will include singers, dancers, twirlers, musicians, and actors; a real smorgasbord of entertainment! Come take advantage of all the young talent Wakulla County has to offer. Proceeds will help the Dramatis Personae troupe with their trip expenses for District Competition.

On Saturday, the fun starts bright and early at 8:30 a.m. with Christmas in Sopchoppy! There will be arts and crafts vendors, food vendors, booths set up by different Wakulla county non-profit organizations, and shopping with the local merchants in downtown Sopchoppy. Who needs to drive to Tallahassee to find those great Christmas gifts? I know for sure that CHAT (Citizens for Humane Animal Treatment) will be selling baked goods (including home made bread by Petra Shuff!), and commemorative ornaments and edible gingerbread shingles will be sold by the Wakulla County Historical Society. In conjunction with the event, a silent auction is going on at the Frog and the Hummingbird in Sopchoppy to benefit CHAT; be sure to stop in and check it out. Saturday is the last day to bid on items. There will also be arts and crafts projects for kids going on at Posh (next to Backwoods Bistro). The Jolly Old Elf himself will arrive in Sopchoppy at around 11:00 a.m., so make sure you bring the kids out so they can let Santa know their Christmas wishes.

From 5:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., also in Sopchoppy, the Sopchoppy and Ochlockonee Bay Methodist Youth will sponsor a "Chicken Dinner and Skits" fundraiser at the Sopchoppy United Methodist Church on Rose Street. Dinner will be served from 5:00 to 6:15, with the skits beginning at 6:30. Dinners can also be ordered to go. See our link below for ticket prices.

Then, join the residents of Panacea for the fourth annual "A Panacea Christmas"! This is always a great event, with a lighted "boats on trailer" and golf-cart parade, as well as gospel music by B.B Barwick and Friends, a tree lighting ceremony (you've got to see this tree; it's absolutely beautiful!), hot chocolate and other goodies. The parade begins at 6:30 p.m., but come early in the day and get some Christmas shopping done with the local merchants in Panacea. Santa Claus will arrive during the parade on a fire truck, and will then visit with the kids to hear their gift lists. While there, take the time to go on the Panacea "Tour of Lights" to see all the homes who have gone all out with the decorations for the annual contest. Prizes will be given to the best decorated homes and the best parade entries. Michelle and Tim Baggett will probably turn out to defend their "Best Decorated Golf Cart" title from last year, so consider this a challenge!

Last, but definitely not least, the St. Marks Yacht Club will host their annual "River of Lights Parade" on the St. Marks River beginning at 6:00 p.m. This is always a fun event, and you can enjoy the parade at several locations along the river, including the Riverside Cafe, Shield's Marina, and Lynn's Riverside Marina. Santa will visit the covered pavilion by the water at the City Park (next to the St. Marks Fort), so make sure the kids are there during the parade as he will probably toss a little Christmas candy their way. That guy really gets around, huh? Wish I knew his secret. I think I need some elves...

Finally, Sunday brings several holiday musical events, including "The Radiant Ringers" handbell choir performance beginning at 3:00 p.m. at Crawfordville United Methodist Church. This should be absolutely spectacular; something you don't want to miss. Also, at 6:00 p.m., Sopchoppy Southern Baptist Church will host their annual Old-Fashioned Christmas Sing, with barbershop quartet-style music and good old Christmas carols to get everybody into the Christmas spirit. What an inspirational way to end the weekend.

Well, I hope I haven't forgotten anything, and I hope you all can find the time to make it to at least one of the above events, because they are all unique Wakulla County experiences; each one with it's own pizazz.

If your church or organization is hosting a holiday event, let me know by emailing me at This email address is being protected from spam bots, you need Javascript enabled to view it and we'll be sure to get it on our list of holiday happenings.

Also, we are offering free Wakulla.com email addresses to anybody who would like to have one ( yourname@wakulla.com ) If interested, simply email me at This email address is being protected from spam bots, you need Javascript enabled to view it and you too can sport a wakulla.com email! How cool is that?

Well, have great weekend, albeit a busy one.

Sincerely,

Mary Katherine Westmark
