From the Publisher:

Dear Readers,

Another busy week gone by, and next week promises to be hopping as well! School starts this Monday, so check out all our links below in the Schools section for information on open house dates and times, school bus routes, school supply lists, and the school calendar. Remember that Monday is an Early Release Day, so the kids will only be in school half the day.

The Wakulla Community Theatre (WCT) will be putting on their spring production in March of 2008, and this year's show will be "The Sound of Music". Auditions for both adult and children's roles will start in late August; check out our link below in Arts and Entertainment for all the details.

How about those Allstars? The Wakulla 12U Allstars team is the top seed in the National Bracket in the Cal Ripken World Series currently going on out in Van Buren, Arkansas! They are only two games away from becoming the World Series Champs! They will play tonight at 9:00 EST against the team from Scottsdale, Arizona; the only team that has beaten them so far in the series. The game will be broadcast locally on WAKU 94.1FM (Wave94), so be sure to tune in. Sandy Barnes, mother of player Jeffrey Barnes, had this to say about tonight's game: "Pray that the boys have confidence and play Wakulla ball like we know that they can. This is the team that beat us the other night." So, let's send some positive vibes their way!

Wakulla County teachers went back to school this past Monday, and the annual "Back to School Breakfast" was held yesterday morning at Medart Elementary School. According to school officials, the system now has close to 350 teachers; amazing! The breakfast was a festive event, with teachers and administrators catching up with each other after their summer vacation. There were approximately 50 new hires this year, mainly due to class size reduction mandates and retirements, which is a record for Wakulla County. We at Wakulla.com would like to wish all the teachers a great 2007-08 school year, and just want them to know how much they and the wonderful job they do are appreciated.

Just a reminder for Wakulla County Rotary Club members: the Wakulla County Rotary Club will hold a retreat at the Wakulla County Senior Center this Saturday, August 18, at 4:00 p.m. Members should plan to attend as the club will be planning for the coming year. Please bring a covered dish.

Also, WCTV.com announced yesterday that the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission has approved a $500,000 grant to be used towards construction of a new fishing pier at Rock Landing in Panacea. Plans for the new pier include slips for commercial fishing boats, as well as charter boats. This is great news for the fishermen of our county!

Well, have a good weekend, and try to relax a little before the school routine kicks in.

Sincerely,

Mary Katherine Westmark
