From the Publisher:
Dear Readers,
I hope you are all having a great week. Only a little over a month until school lets out; it's hard to believe it's almost over! I'm still getting used to the fact that I now have a child in middle school, and she'll be a 7th grader before I know it! Yikes.
The Relay for Life celebration was held this past weekend, and it was another huge success. The Honored Survivor was Pat Jones, Director of Transportation for Wakulla County Schools, and Polly Lawhon, a breast cancer survivor, was the keynote speaker during the Luminaria ceremony. Their stories were inspirational and really enriched the event for everyone. I hope you were able to make it out this year; if not, please try to attend next year. The event really needs the support of the community. I don't know the final total yet on how much was raised, but will try to get in touch with event chairman Linda Stalvey before the week is out for all the details.
This weekend brings the Stephen C. Smith Memorial Regatta, another wonderful fund raiser for the fight against cancer. This is the 35th annual event, and it just keeps getting better and better. In addition to the races held on Saturday and Sunday, you don't want to miss the Parrothead Boat Parade held on Sunday at noon. It's a hoot; definitely worth coming out for! The regatta culminates with the Live Auction which begins later in the afternoon on Sunday. There are always all sorts of great items to bid on, so bring the whole family out for a great day at the beach.
While you're there, check out all the changes going on at Shell Point. The developers of the resort are hosting a "Beach Party Open House" to show off their new homes along Walker Creek Drive, and to inform the public of what else lies in store there at Shell Point. The restaurant and tiki bar are scheduled to be completed by Memorial Day; let's keep our fingers crossed!
Well, have a safe weekend. Thanks for supporting Wakulla.com. We really appreciate it.
Sincerely,
Mary Katherine Westmark
