Scott Paterna's Fishing Report November 15, 2006 |
Cool Runnings on Apalachee Bay!
Time to go fishing. The water temperature on the flats has hit the mid sixties.
This has trout and redfish eating extra amounts of bait in preparation for the winter. These same fish are schooling up and headed up river and up creeks. Indeed, these are plenty of redfish reports up the St. Marks River at the power plant and even to Highway 98. This is important. This pattern will produce fish throughout the winter and it is already in place. We haven't even had a "frost" yet. Over ten reports of fish up the river have been received. Of course, they are still all over the oyster bars at the mouth and into the East River and surrounding creeks. Red fish are everywhere. Cast a live shrimp, gold spoon or topwater lure. Work the current adjacent the creek mouthes and oyster bars.

Trout have schooled up on the shallow flats. The two to four foot
range is on fire. East or West of the St. Marks River over to the
Aucilla. Tom Keels and Rick Johnson boated five trout weighing 12 Lbs.
8oz. They tossed pearl jigs in 2 to 3 feet of water adjacent Cobb
Rock. Tom and Rick earned first place honors in Saturday's NFGFC's
tournament. Way to go!! Casey Cook and Derrick Reed took second place
honors with a weight of 10 Lbs. 8oz. Fish a jig or live shrimp under a
Cajun Thunder float. Fish the mouth of the St. Marks out from the St.
Marks Lighthouse adjacent the sand bars. On the West flats, fish the
Patty Island flats. There are plenty of trout on the flats. Set up a
drift and go to work.

The fall is when bonus monster fish move shallow. Jon Woods
released a 42" redfish in three feet of water in front of Mashes Sands
Beach. He was fishing for sharks with a live pinfish. This is
happening all along Apalachee Bay. Eric Will boated a similar fish
near Black Rock last month. Be ready for nearshore monsters!
Grouper continues to produce plenty of fish at Wakulla Regional Reef and Marker 24 barge. Trolling Stretch lures and bottom fishing with squid and sardines is working. Anglers who are having incredible success do not want the word to get out... So it's a secret... but there are plenty of limits of gag grouper coming from these two areas. Capt. Randle Leger mentioned we are in the midst of a condensed nearshore grouper season.
Good luck. Fall fishing fun awaits!
