Scott Paterna's Fishing Report January 5, 2007 |
The rivers and creeks continue to produce plenty of quality fish. Anglers with bottom machines marked big schools of trout in the deep holes of the St. Marks between the San Marcos Fort and the St. Marks Lighthouse. These were keeper trout. There is deep water just outside the channels. Work these areas when boat traffic allows. Reds have moved up the Wakulla to Hwy. 98. Otto Hough and Randy Trousdell's son and grandson boated a limit of reds on on live shrimp. This is winter fishing and these reds will be up the Wakulla all winter. As you can see by the photos, there isn't a crowd of anglers taking advantage of this pattern. This is also a great kayak anglers pattern. Put in at the Hwy 98 and begin working the shoreline and deep holes with live shrimp.

The East River is now a monster winter hotspot. Begin where the river narrows at Pelican Point or kayak anglers an put in at the top of the East River. Between these two spots, lies schools of reds and trout. Scott Peterson and William Huber released sixty four reds and kept two. Live shrimp was the ticket. Another angler located a "bubbling spring" way up the East River at low tide. He quietly moved nearby and a school of trout was all around it. Big trout were present. Anglers with shallow draft boats should work the East River with a vengeance...

Now creeks are also full of fish. Any creek is a potential hotspot. Pick a favorite spot way up a creek and see what is present. Deep Creek, the Pinhook and Stony Bayou are winter hotspots.
The weather forecast shows no freezing temperatures for the next two weeks. Is it really January??? This will get fish feeding up until the next cold front.
Offshore grouper is hot 30 feet and out. Squid on the bottom and trolling lures is the ticket. Robert Houghton boated another limit of grouper. These are big fish and he left them biting. Start at Marker 24 barge. There are plenty of fishing patterns producing right now. Take advantage of this rarely warm January! Good luck and good fishing to all.
