Scott Paterna's Fishing Report

  December 4, 2006

There are both Fall fishing patterns and Winter fishing patterns in full swing.  We are in the midst of the most fertile fishing transition ever.  Fall grouper fishing can't get much better.  Cooler weather has moved grouper out a few feet.  Trolling is the ticket.  One angler was trolling a Stretch 25 around Marker 24 barge.  As he watched the depth finder a rod doubled over.  A keeper grouper was boated.  Over the same spot again, another grouper took hold.  Five keepers were boated while nothing meaningful showed up on the bottom machine.  That is why trolling is so effective.  Covering as much ground as possible increases the odds.  Some anglers had success at the nearshore reefs bottom-fishing LY's and sardines.  Other anglers found these fish have moved to 30 feet and out.  With no severe cold weather in sight, this pattern will continue to produce.

O.K.  Now the creeks and rivers presently contain more fish than at any previous time in memory.  Redfish have filled in every inch of the St. Marks River up to Highway 98 and up the Wakulla River past Shell Island Fish Camp.  Hundreds and more like thousands of reds are enjoying all the baitfish up the St. Marks.  There are just as many reds up towards Newport and far fewer boats fishing.

Ryan Smith and his daughter Marley fished less than a half-mile from teh Newport bridge.  They cast live shrimp to the bottom.  The first 20 shrimp were eaten by the schools of ladyfish.  With heavier lead, the shrimp go to the bottom.  Thirty redfish were boated.  Marley caught her first keeper red ever!!

There are so many mullet, ladyfish and pinfish, the predators will see no reason to leave.  Many creeks are holding bait. Locate bait and start fishing.  Good luck to all and good fishing!!

P.S.  The tournament scoreboard is up.  Sorry for taking so long to post the standings.
