Scott Paterna's Fishing Report

  December 10, 2006

Anglers have been working the St. Marks and Wakulla Rivers while enjoying unprecedented fishing action.  Reports of forty redfish released is almost commonplace.  Many fish are under the 18" minimum size, but all parties had their keeper.  Present cooler weather will bring larger fish up the rivers.  These fish are being caught all the way up the river.  Some anglers feel the action is better by the Highway 98 bridge.

Trout are moving up the St. Marks as well.  The "powerlines" is trout territory.  This is up a mile or so past the San Marcos boat ramp.  Bounce live shrimp off the bottom or work a jig off the bottom.  Electric chicken, glow and salt and pepper jigs are winter colors.  So is fire tiger.

Dozens of reds have been released on the Wakulla starting below the Highway 98 bridge.  This is an under pressured area filled with reds.  It is a shallow river, so topwater lures are effective.  There are trout and reds residing at the San Marcos Fort on the Wakulla River side.  As the water temperature cools, fish go up the river.  During warm periods, fish head out to the mouth of the river.  This is a Fall pattern, known as "the river dance".

Offshore anglers are enjoying plenty of grouper and seabass.  Grouper are in 30 feet and out.  Robert Houghton boated a 20 pound gag grouper.  He bounced squid off the bottom in the vicinity of the Marker 24 barge.  At times the water clarity is extraordinary.  At 30 feet, grouper are clearly visible.  This is when conditions are calm.  One angler abandoned his grouper gear, fearing it was too visible.  He dropped a gulp lure down on his redfish outfit.  That grouper inhaled it and the fight was on.  Several keepers were boated utilizing this method.

Fishing is wide open.  As one angler mentioned "there is a pile of fish in the rivers".  Have fun and be happy!!
