Written by Carol Sheppard, DEP Office of Greenways & Trails Friday, 28 May 2010 13:31
TALLAHASSEE – The Florida Department of Environmental Protection’s Office of Greenways & Trails (OGT) will join with the Florida Trail Association (FTA), Wakulla County and the United States Department of Agriculture Forest Service in hosting a National Trails Day® celebration at the Wakulla Station Trailhead of the Tallahassee-St. Marks Historic Railroad State Trail.
The event will showcase trail and outdoor recreation opportunities in Wakulla County and the Big Bend area. Public agencies, non-profit organizations, outfitters and guides will be on hand to share information and provide materials related to their sites and programs. Families are welcome to enjoy the Boundless Playground® during this morning celebration of the area’s many outdoor recreational resources.
At 10:00 a.m., the FTA will recognize the Florida Trail’s newly designated Gateway Communities of Wakulla County and the cities of Sopchoppy and St. Marks. Gateway Communities are destinations which offer tourism amenities to support the experience of hiking the Florida Trail and offer access to other types of outdoor recreation. Florida’s National Scenic Trail is a footpath stretching nearly 1,600 miles from Big Cypress National Preserve to Pensacola Beach.
