Florida Tourism Task Force to Host 2nd Geocache Campaign and Contest

hiddentreasures of natural florida.gifThe Original Florida Tourism Task Force is kicking-off its second Geocache Campaign and Contest following the overwhelming success of the 2006 event.  The Tourism Task Force with the help of VISIT FLORIDA, will officially launch The Hidden Treasures of Natural North Florida Geocaching Contest 2010 at a press briefing at Thursday, Feb. 25 at 11 a.m. at the Leaf Theater in Quincy.

{sidebar id=1}The Original Florida created a geocaching trail through 12 North Florida counties to highlight the cultural, historic and nature-based amenities that stretch from Gainesville to Quincy and White Springs to Cedar Key.  The trail is a modern day scavenger hunt that provides successful cachers with a chance to win one of several vacation getaways, paddling or fishing trips, horseback riding and more.  Contestants need only to find the caches listed under “Hidden Treasures of Natural North Florida 2010 and log onto www.NaturalNorthFlorida.com and click on the Hidden Treasures contest logo and answer the questions about the cache or its location.

So what is Geocaching?

The GPS units receive signals from satellites, fixing the latitude and longitude coordinates of the hidden caches (pronounced cashes).  These caches can be as large as bread to as small as film canister.  Using clues provided by a geocaching web site such as www.geocaching.com , cachers track down these treasures often cleverly hidden in public places.  Geocaching is not only for technology buffs:  Families, nature groups, Elderhostel and other outdoor enthusiasts are also on the treasure trail.

The mission of the Original Florida Tourism Task Force is to promote the natural, historic, and cultural attractions of the area to increase the number of visitors and to extend their stay in the region.  The goal is to enhance the area’s economy, image, and quality of life through expanded revenues and employment opportunities.
