Fall CCOW Field Trips will Take You to Sinkholes and Coastal Marshes in Wakulla County

Sparkling Gems Tour – Nov 10th

blue sink 175.gif{sidebar id=3}Wakulla Springs Ambassador Cal Jamison will be leading a tour of the area’s springs and sinkholes.  Join us at 9am on Saturday morning at the southwest corner of the intersection of New Light Church Road, CJ Spears Road, and Crawfordville Hwy (US319) - the first intersection south of the Leon/Wakulla County line.  We will assemble there in the River Sinks Tract parking lot and travel in a van for the rest of the trip.

You will follow the line of sinks that open to the Wakulla-Leon Cave system as it meanders south towards Wakulla Springs.  Be prepared for short walks to some of the sinks and bring bug repellent as ticks are plentiful this year.  At the end of the 3 hour trip, you will have the opportunity to follow Cal in your own vehicle to Cherokee Sink, see the restoration work being done there, take a swim, and eat your picnic lunch.  Registration is limited, email Rebecca to reserve your spot:  cpi_rebecca@hotmail.com.  You can also call 850-421-1638.

Birding the Coastal Marshes– Dec 1st

common loon 150.gifThis trip is in conjunction with Apalachee Audubon.  Join local birders Andy and Julie Wraithmell for a fieldtrip to the coastal marshes of Wakulla County at Bottoms Road and Mashes Sands. Listen for Clapper Rails, scan for Bald Eagles and scope the river for wintering birds like Bufflehead and Common Loons.  If time permits, we’ll also stop at Lake Munson on the way back to Tallahassee to see what wintering songbirds we can find in the hammocks, and terns or gulls on the lake.

Meet at 8AM at the Wachovia Bank on South Monroe across from the North Florida Fairgrounds for carpooling (encouraged) or at 8:30 AM at the end of Bottoms Road in Wakulla Co.  (To reach Bottoms Rd., from the US 98/ CR 319 split in Medart, drive about 2.5 miles south towards Panacea on US 98.  Just outside of the city limits, Bottoms Rd. will be on your left.  Follow the road to the parking lot/ boat launch at the end.).  The trip should finish around noon.  To register, contact Julie Wraithmell:  jwraithmell@audubon.org .
