7th Annual Wakulla Children's Fishing Tournament a Success
The Wakulla County Children’s Fishing Tournament finished delightfully after having to be rescheduled. Approximately 200 children registered and took advantage of the carnival atmosphere at Woolley Park where ‘weigh in’ was taking place. The rain was kind enough to hold off until after 1:00. The winners were announced and the waiting rain poured down; perhaps in an effort to recapture the fish out of water. Jerry Evans emceed the event and the Sheriff’s Volunteers manned the registration table alongside Peggy Bennett, both volunteer and office manager for our Wakulla County Parks and Recreation Department. Because of our major sponsor, Ben Watkins, and all our contributors, we were able to give each and every child a T-shirt and goody bag, along with their choice of a tackle box or fishing pole.
The winner in the Bass category was Allen Harrell with Brandon Trumdull catching 2nd place. 1st place in the Pan Fish category went to Ethan Trumdull with Brandon Trumdull taking high honors with 2nd place; third place in this category went to Jarrod Crum. Sammy Ray Radabaugh took 1st place in the Catfish category and Allen Harrell, of Bass fame, took home a 2nd place trophy.
The Whiting group 1st place trophy went to Ryan Martin followed by Dustin Cmehil 2nd and Bryan Nichols reeling in a 3rd place trophy. There was no floundering around for a 1st place winner as Shelby Rivers weighed in with the only Flounder. White Trout proved more abundant as Kelly Smith, Kasey Wynne and Hope Van Munster respectively, took 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place trophies.
Speckled Trout trophies were captured by Caleb Rivers, 1st; Stephanie Cmehil, 2nd; and Lee Ann Merchant for 3rd. Logan Cook, Thomas Kendall and Chance Farthing all spoke Spanish Mackerel weighing in with 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners. It was a red letter day for Keith Godden hooking the sole Redfish and taking home a 1st place trophy.
Bailey Estes won the Grand Prize Giveaway of an Annual Pass to Wild Adventures. This includes a parking pass and $100.00 spending money. Now that’s a big catch!
Plans are already under way for next year’s tournament. If you’re not involved in this great activity for the community and its families; you should be. It’s a great time to enjoy and a benefit to all.
