Fishing Lines by Benjamin Colona: Flatheads in the Ochlockonee

DamFlatHeads006-249x187My friends Donny, Rob and I all hit the Ochlocknee the other day with some live bait, monster hooks,125 lb leader, and a stout grouper rod for Mr. Flathead!

We got on the water around O-dark-hundred with our headlamps and a positive attitude (we had never tried to catch flatheads before).  We all anchored up on a spot in the river and dropped our rods straight below us, waiting for a BUMPP!  All our bait was GONE except for two baitfish due to pesky gar.

So Donny drops down and a few minutes later...,"Guys, she just hit it!"  All our eyes were on his reel as line came off the reel.  He flipped the drag over and Fish on!  We drag her in and snap some pics.  High fives all around.  (Donny and his flathead pictured above right.)

Then it was my turn, so I drop down praying that a gar doesn't take it and low and behold I felt the signature "thumppp" (feels just like a bull red).  So I flipped the lever and waited for the circle hook to do its job.  Then she found out what was going on and from there on out it was a balls to the walls tug-o-war!  I winched her off the logs and she emerged at the surface, only to unleash the power of the beast and head back down, LOL.  But my angling skills conquered the behemoth and she was mine.  (Benjamin with his catch pictured below.)

Got off the water around midnight.  Love it when a plan comes together!
