The recreational harvest season for snook will be open from Sept. 17 to Dec. 15 in Florida’s Atlantic state and federal waters, including Lake Okeechobee and the Kissimmee River. Catch-and-release-only fishing for snook still is legal in all other areas.

Anglers may keep one snook between 28 and 32 inches total length per day in the open harvest areas.  Licensed saltwater anglers must purchase a $10 permit to harvest snook.  Snatch-hooking and spearing snook are prohibited, and it is illegal to buy or sell snook.

The harvest of snook remains closed in all of Florida’s Gulf of Mexico, Everglades National Park and Monroe County state and federal waters until Sept. 1, 2011, to protect snook populations affected by Florida’s prolonged cold weather earlier this year.  Anglers may still catch and release snook during snook harvest closures, and the FWC encourages everyone to handle and release these fish carefully to help ensure their survival upon release.
