The May 2012 First Sunday at the Refuge Presentation Series will feature Michael Keys, Wildlife Biologist, St. Marks NWR as he presents “Lightning, Longleaf and a Formerly Common Woodpecker” at 2:00 PM, Sunday, May 6, 2012 at the St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge.

The red-cockaded woodpecker is an excellent management indicator species reflecting the health of the fire-dependent longleaf pine-grassland ecosystems to which it has evolved.  The red-cockaded woodpecker population is the most intensively monitored and managed endangered species on the refuge.

First Sunday presentations are held in the Environmental Education Center, “Nature’s Classroom” at St. Marks Refuge, 1255 Lighthouse Road in St. Marks, Florida.  Seating is limited so please come early.  Refuge entrance fees apply. Please call 850.925-6121 for information.

As a bonus, a field trip to observe red-cockaded woodpecker banding will be held from 9:45 AM to 12:30 PM, leaving from the Otter Lake Picnic Area.  The field trip is limited to 25 people.  Preregister by calling 850-925-6121.
