It's Time for the 2007 Keep Wakulla County Beautiful Coastal Cleanup
{sidebar id=1}Keep Wakulla County Beautiful's Coastal Cleanup 2007 will be held on Saturday, September 15th. If you're bringing a group, please call 926-0830 and leave a message or write geiger.amy@ccbg.com to let us know, and we'll set your t-shirts aside so you'll be more sure of getting the correct size.
Site Captains will await volunteers at the following sites from 8:30 to 9:30 AM:
- the Boat Landing at St. Marks
- Shell Point Beach at the Gazebo
- Wooley Park in Panacea
- the Park at Mashes Sands
The Coastal Cleanup does three things really well:
1) it removes litter from our environment, which protects us from hurting ourselves and it removes an eyesore.
2) it protects marine life from entanglement and/or death. Did you know that last year, over 1,000 animals were reported entangled in debris at the Coastal Cleanup? Only 1 survived.
3) it provides children with visual proof that many, many people believe that protecting our environment is important. As the children grow, they'll take this message to heart.
Bring your organization, your church group, your friends, and your neighbors.
An after-cleanup picnic for those who picked up trash will be held at Wooley Park at 11:00. The picnic is brought to us by Embarq as it has been for many years.
Next, we'll have a "Weigh Your Butts" contest. "Weigh Your Butts" calls attention to the problem of cigarette butts on the ground. They are the Number 1 type of litter (by far) found on the ground!
Keep Wakulla County Beautiful Directors Ray and Linda Boles have collected envelopes of money to give as cash prizes to the groups of young people who collect the most cigarette butts.
The next activity will be a drawing for a free scuba certification (valued at $400) for 16 year olds and above who are interested in becoming certified divers, compliments of Les Marshall of Going Under Dive Services. Class certification will come through his business. There will also be drawings for 4 free park entrance tickets and boat rides for 2 donated by Sandy Cook at Wakulla Springs (for adult participants only). Be sure to get out there and pick up some trash along the coast so that you can be a part of the giveaway!
Finally, Ray and Linda Boles will again bring us Litter Loot: cash prizes for those who clean; adults and kids alike. Ray and Linda want young folks to remember that they worked hard and had a great time at the Coastal Cleanup!
Call 926-0830 and sign up now! Or just show up at the site of your choice!
