The
water temperature last week was creeping up to that magic number and
some trout had moved onto the flats east of the Lighthouse. With the
cooler weather this week and the cold rain, the temperature has dropped
and I imagine those fish are pushing back close to shore and around the
creeks mouths and oyster bars. Red Fish Point and Gray Mare Rock were
two areas last week that produced several limits of trout and you might
want to try them again this weekend. Chartreuse grubs and twitch baits
were what most of them were caught on. There isn't going to be a very
high tide and only a one inch drop from high to low on Saturday so
fishing is probably gonna be tough.
There are some big trout
in Big Creek and Stoney Bayou and Big Pass and Little Pass should also
be holding both trout and reds. Reds are still being caught up the St.
Marks River past the Power Plant and there are still plenty of
sheepshead in the river. Graves Creek and Goose Creek around Wakulla
Beach should both be good spots for trout and reds and look for the
trout to start heading onto the shallow flats around Patty's Island
when the water temperature gets up a little higher.
The Spring Creek and Oyster Bay area are holding plenty of trout around the oyster bars and reds should start schooling up with the rising water temperatures. I've done fairly well with chartreuse grubs and the electric chicken but haven't found them hungry for shrimp yet. The strikes came more often if the grub was tipped with a small piece of shrimp.
Look for
reds around the docks that line the Ochlockonee River and also around
the bars at Bald Point. There are plenty of reds around the Docks at
Lanark Village and they are starting to show up in good numbers around
Dog Island. It's not gonna be long before our fishing really turns on
but right now it's still pretty tough.
They reported someone catching a cobia at Panama City and also some pompano so they're moving this way.
Offshore
fishing continues to be good if you can go when the wind doesn't blow.
Thirty five to sixty five feet of water seems to be the best depth and
the red and white and chartreuse and blue Stretch Baits seems to be the
best colors for trolling.
Remember to leave that float plan with someone and be careful out there.
