Captain Jody Campbell
Fishing Report

This will probably be the busiest weekend on the water for the year and the ramps and bays are gonna be crowded. Get there early and be careful on the water. The weather forecast is for windy conditions so fishing is gonna be a little tough but there are plenty of fish out there and how many times have the weathermen been wrong in their predictions.
Lots of big trout were caught last weekend between the
Lighthouse and the Econfina. Top water baits early and the Rattle
Redfin are producing some big fish. The area around Cobb Rocks is good
for trout and look for some reds around Gray Mare. Live shrimp or the
gulp are gonna produce. Stoney Bayou is holding plenty of redfish and
Big Pass and Little Pass should be good places for reds. Also look for
reds in Graves Creek off Wakulla Beach. Live shrimp or gold spoons
should work. The west flats around the stake line are producing plenty
of trout using the glow and new penny Gulp under a Cajun Thunder.
The
area between Shell Point and Panacea continues to produce nice catches
of trout and the Shell Point Reef is holding plenty of trout along the
edges on the falling tide and full tide. Reds are showing up around
the bars in good numbers on the full tide and live shrimp or mud
minnows is your best bet. The Ochlockonee is producing reds around the
docks and trout and reds around the oyster bars at the mouth. Spanish
have been seen up the Ochlockonee as far as the boat club which is
about three miles above the state park. I even heard of trout and
sheepshead being caught up there due to the high salinity in the water
right now.
Lanark continues to be hot with trout on Turkey
Point Shoals, the east end of Lanark Reef in front of Lorenzos and
around Dog Island. Live pilchards are the preferred bait of a lot of
people but the new penny Gulp under a Cajun Thunder works awfully well
also. Look for reds still hanging around the docks. Some pompano are
still being caught and Dog Island reef is covered up with Spanish,
blues and ladyfish.
Get in about 15 to 20 feet of water and
start chumming and you're bound to attract Spanish. You may also bring
a cobia into the chumline. All of the markers from St. Marks to
Carrabelle have been holding cobia and a live pinfish is hard to beat.
If they won't hit the pinfish try throwing a gulp in front of him.
Sometimes they just want a smaller bait.
Offshore for grouer,
snapper and amberjack is really good right now and 30 to 80 feet of
water has been producing fish. The 80 foot mark seems to be where most
folks are fishing. Live pinfish or dead bait will produce. Small
pilchards and squid will get the snapper and the amberjack are gonna
want a live pinfish. Flat lining a pinfish while grouper fishing may
produce a big king or cobia.
Know your limits and don't forget to
leave that float plan with someone. Good luck, good fishing and have a
safe and relaxing Memorial Day Weekend!
