Captain Jody Campbell
Fishing Report

  February 27, 2007

The weather is really getting nice and I believe with a couple of more weeks like this the trout will start moving out onto the flats
in close, especially around the Econfina and Aucilla Rivers.  It always happens there first and then the fishing around St. Marks and Shell Point will start getting good.  Remember trout season opens back up on Thursday, March 1st but Grouper fishing continues to be closed until March 15th in Federal waters.  You can still fish in state waters and there are plenty of grouper still there.

The creeks east of the Lighthouse are producing lots of redfish using live shrimp.  The Gulp is also producing and the new kid on the block, the Slurp by Saltwater Assassin is proving to be a real good bait.  Look for reds and sheepshead in the Wakulla River and if you like to bass fish, the bass in the Wakulla River are starting to bed and love plastic lizzards and Rapalas worked slow along the top.  The big flat below Olin Dock has always been a good producer.

Reds are still being caught around the docks at Lanark Village and look for big reds on the West End of Dog Island and East End of St. George.  Reds are still being caught up the Carrabelle River as far as the bridge and the basin at the FSU Marine Lab is still producing some trout and reds.

Offshore is limited to state waters until the middle of March but plenty of grouper are being caught off Dog Island trolling on the 35 foot ledge.  If you like black sea bass, you can catch plenty of them and some big ones this time of year.  Take light tackle and you can have a lot of fun.  Shrimp on the bottom works well and they also like the Berkeley Gulp.

Remember to leave that float plan and be careful out there. Good luck and good fishing!

We are thinking of coming to your area in July, but know very little about fishing in this area. Any general info would be helpful. Also, do people have any luck scalloping in your area?
