Fishing Report

September 9, 2007

{sidebar id=1}If you read my article in the Wakulla News this week I made an error.  I said scallop season closes on the 15th, but the last day to get your scallops is Monday the 10th.  There are plenty of scallops still out there but don't go after the 10th.

Fishing continues to be fairly slow in our area but the red fish seem to be schooling up and good numbers are being caught.  The area around the Rock Garden has been fairly productive and Stoney Bayou has also been pretty good.  Gold spoons, top water baits, the Gulp or live shrimp should work.

Little Pass is another spot starting to produce.  Live pinfish has been doing very well there.  Trolling the oyster bars with gold spoons is another pretty productive way to catch reds.  You need a fairly good high tide and ease along the bars.  There are plenty of oyster bars at the mouth of the St. Marks River, in Oyster Bay and at the mouth of the Ochlockonee for doing this.  The docks around Lanark along 98 are produing quite a few reds and the stump hole on the ocean side of Dog Island continues to produce.

Quite a few trout are being caught but most are small.  With the water temperature starting to drop ever so slightly, our trout fishing should start picking up.  Fish the shallow water early with top water and as it heats up during the day move to deeper water and fish a Gulp or live shrimp under a Cajun Thunder or a Gulp on just a lead head along the bottom.

I haven't heard of any Spanish being caught in the past week but it won't be long till they start making their way back south.  The fall can be as good as the spring.  Quite a few cobia are still being caught and the towers off Carrabelle have been holding some big fish.  Grouper fishing is good in 55 to 100 feet with live and dead bait producing.  Fall is a good time to troll in shallow for grouper and hopefully cooler weather and water isn't too far off.

Some tarpon are still being caugh at Turkey Point Shoals and I hear the ones people are seeing are hungry.  Remember to leave that float plan with somebody and be careful out there.  Also, Monday Sept 10th is the last day for scalloping.  Good luck and good fishing!
