Captain Jody Campbell
Fishing Report

  March 6, 2007

The water temperature is heating up and this past weekend saw some good fishing.  Jerry's Bait and Tackle at Wakulla Station held their first trout tournament of the year and over 15 pounds of trout took first place honors and quite a few fish over 3 1/2 pounds were caught.  Most fish were caught in very shallow water at the mouth of the creeks east of the Econfina River and in from Rock Island.

Plentyof reds are still being caught in the creeks between the St. Marks Lighthouse and the Aucilla River and Deep Creek has been extremely
productive.  Live shrimp, mud minnows or the Gulp will all produce.  The deep holes in the Wakulla are still holding reds and sheepshead and freshwater bass fishing on the river is extremely good right now.

Around Shell Point look for fish around the Oyster Bars and in the Spring Creek area.  Live shrimp or the Gulp under the Cajun Thunder will produce fish.  I have seen lots of pinfish under my dock at night so the water temperature is getting where it needs to be to push the trout out on the flats.  Hopefully by next weekend we will see them move out onto the flats, if the temperatures don't get real cold.

Plenty of reds are being caught in the Ochlockonee River around the docks all the way up to the old Claytons.  Live shrimp will work best and the high tides are the better times.  The Rotary Reef off the Ochlockonee is producing some nice catches of Sheepshead using live or fresh shrimp.  Fishng around Lanark was extremely good for trout this past weekend and live shrimp in Ballast Cove produced a lot of nice trout.  The flats off Hwy 98, just out from the water tower, in about 3 feet of water also produced a lot of fish.

Grouper fishing is still closed in Federal waters and not a lot of people are fishing.  Some of those that are going are catching fish in 35 to 40 feet of water with trolling baits.  There will probably be a lot of boats on the water this weekend so be careful out there and don't forget to leave that float plan with somebody.  Good luck and good fishing!
