Captain Jody Campbell Fishing Report
October 5, 2007
Well last weekend was a blowout and I do mean blowout. The wind blew about as hard as it could blow. Despite the wind plenty of people fished and this weekend they are calling for lighter winds so fishing should be good. We're coming up on new moon next week and the tides are pretty good this weekend.
Plenty of trout are being caught down around Gray Mare, Cobb Rocks and the Rock Garden. Live shrimp and the Gulp under a Cajun Thunder are gonna work. Top water plugs fished early will pay off on some exciting fishing. Look for reds around the shorelline and in Stoney Bayou and the Rock Garden. Gold Spoons, top water baits or live bait will work.
Trout are holding at the mouth of East River and the oyster bars at the mouth of the St. Marks is holding plenty of trout, reds and some big flounder. Big Pass and Little Pass are both producing reds and trout on the flats around Patty's Island. There is lots of bait in the bay between Shell Point and Panacea and plenty of fish. Watch for diving birds because there are some big Spanish out there right now and as it cools down more should show up.
Plenty of trout around Piney and the T Bar and live shrimp or the white or new penny Gulp will work. Reds are starting to school up and fish live shrimp or pinfish on the bottom around the oyster bars. The silver trout should turn on pretty soon and there are several deep holes in Oyster Bay and the silver trout hole outside the Panacea Channel is starting to turn on. Use cutbait or fresh shrimp on the bottom.
Reds are still being caught around the bars at the mouth of the Ochlockonee and the docks along the river all the way up to the State Park. Look for big black drum around the Ochlockonee River Bridge on Hwy 98. Trout and red fishing continues to be very good around Lanark Village and live shrimp and the Gulp are producing. Live pilchards and top water lures are also working very well.
Look for Spanish on the Dog Island reef and some pompano are being caught. Big bull reds should start showing up in the Bob Sikes Pass and also around the sunken shrimp boat in the pass between St. George and Dog Island. There are also some big grouper holding there. Offshore should really start getting good and fish should start moving in shallower. Most folks are fishing 80 to 100 feet of water but I heard of some fairly good catches coming from as shallow as 35 feet.
There are plenty of kings offshore and a live pinfish flatlined while grouper fishing should pay off. Also look for cobia around the towers and buoy markers at St. Marks or Carrabelle. Remember to leave that float plan and be careful out there. Good luck and good fishing!
