SELECT POLICY COUNCIL ON STRATEGIC PLANNING: After a busy first week of the regular session the Capitol will mostly be quiet on Friday. One meeting that still remained on the schedule is that of the House Select Council on Strategic Planning and Economic Planning, which has before what may develop quietly into one of the major issues of the session – a rebirth of the effort to broaden the state’s Medicaid reform experiment. Currently being tried in five counties, the initiative seeks to make Medicaid work more like private health care and there’s talk of expanding it. The council merely workshops, with no legislation before it on the issue. There’s also continuing talk of energy exploration – also known as oil drilling – before the panel, but again, no votes on any legislation expected. (9 a.m., 212 Knott, The Capitol.)
SENATE QUIET: There are no Senate meetings scheduled today.
GELBER, SACHS GO AFTER FAKE VETS : Sen. Dan Gelber, D-Miami Beach and Rep. Maria Lorts Sachs, D-Delray Beach will hold a news conference this morning in Deerfield Beech about legislation that would make it a felony for someone to misrepresent themself as a veteran to solicit donations. Sachs said in many Florida cities, paid solicitors dress in military uniforms to ask shoppers and motorists for contributions. The bill (HB 1455) outlaws that. (9 a.m., Deerfield Beach VA Outpatient Clinic, 2100 SW 10 St., Deerfield Beach.)
CRIST, NO PUBLIC EVENTS: The governor has mostly staff meetings of some Board of Trustees interviews on his schedule, but no public events today.
CAMPAIGN EVENTS
MEEK IN BOYNTON: U.S. Senate candidate Kendrick Meek (D) meets with Palm Beach County supporters. (10:45 a.m., St. John Missionary Baptist Church, 900 N. Seacrest Boulevard, Boynton Beach.)
ADVANCES LATER TO PREVIEW NEXT WEEK: Check back with the News Service later for the Advances, a guide to what’s happening next week.
