Wakulla Democrats Make History at Inaugural Black Caucus Meeting
Wakulla Democrats came together to make history Tuesday, July 22 at the Wakulla Tallahassee Community College Annex. Every seat in the room was filled and several latecomers stood in the back to hear Florida Black Caucus President Lizzie Jenkins explain to Wakulla Democrats how to start a Wakulla chapter. Attendees included Superintendent David Miller, Sheriff David Harvey, County Commissioner George Green, numerous candidates for county offices, a field representative from the Barack Obama campaign, Democratic National Convention Delegates Mary Mooney and Alan Brock, and other members of the Wakulla Democrat Executive Committee.
More than 25 people took oaths of office and made financial pledges to become charter members of the first Wakulla chapter of the Florida Black Caucus. An executive board was nominated and elected unanimously: President Alfred Nelson, 1st Vice President Dr. Chinesta Skipper-Smith, 2nd Vice President Kerry Cotton, Secretary Malenie Bruce, and Treasurer Jacqueline Green.
Representative Curtis Richardson spoke briefly to the assemblage and donated $1000 to the newly formed Wakulla chapter of the Florida Black Caucus and an additional $1000 to the Wakulla Democratic Executive Committee.
Wakulla Black Caucus President Alfred Nelson began his term by announcing an initiative to get out the vote through the “Vote at Home” program. Wakulla Democrats will be encouraged to request ballots to vote at home using what have been traditionally known as “absentee ballots.” State Democratic Committeewoman Mary Mooney affirmed the importance of this initiative, “Voters can use a paper ballot in their own home. Imagine being able to discuss issues and candidates with family and community members while sitting around your kitchen table.” Interested people can read more about this alternative to traditional voting models at www.WakullaDemocrat.org or contact their Democratic Party Precinct representatives (also listed on the website) for further information.
