Wakulla Democratic Executive Committee Awards Scholarship to “What it Means to be a Democrat” Essay Contest Winner
Crawfordville, Florida—The Wakulla Democratic Executive Committee announced the winner of the organization’s first annual scholarship essay contest at the 2009 Wakulla High School Awards Ceremony on Monday, May 18. Former state representative Curtis Richardson awarded the $250 scholarship and an engraved plaque to junior Brandi Hebert. Mr. Richardson also presented a perpetual plaque to Wakulla High Principal Michael Crouch on behalf of the WDEC.
The WDEC recognized Brandi Hebert during their regular meeting at the Wakulla Democratic Headquarters. Special guest Florida Democratic Party 2nd Vice Chair Judy Mount congratulated Ms. Hebert on her winning essay.
Ms. Hebert, who has also been an active member of the Wakulla High School Young Democrat Club, wrote in her essay, “Being a Democrat is not just running for Senate, it is volunteering at a soup kitchen or giving spare change to the homeless Vietnam veteran on the side of the road who cannot afford a hot meal, it is choosing to use energy saving light bulbs, and it is using our hard won right of suffrage to vote for change.”
Wakulla High School Young Democrat faculty advisor Dr. Rachel Pienta commented, “Brandi is an amazing young woman. I first got to know her as a freshman in a Writing class. Now, Brandi is an accomplished Honors student about to enter her senior year of high school who makes time for civic duties such as public service and political activism.”
