Tully Receives Navy/Marine Achievement Medal While in Iraq
William (Billy) S. Tully, Jr., son of William S. Tully, Sr. and Della Hattery of Crawfordville was awarded the Navy/Marine Achievement Medal. Tully was awarded the medal due to his contributions and part of additional duties while assigned to A Company 3D Brigade Support Battalion 1st Brigade Combat Team 3D Infantry division, Ft. Stewart, Georgia (Deployed).
Billy is a Staff Sergeant in the United States Army. His wife Betsy and four children live in Allenhurst, Georgia outside of Ft. Stewart. This is Billy's 3rd combat tour in Iraq. His unit deployed in January of 2007 and is scheduled to return at the beginning of April 2008.
While his duties primarily included running the Company Communications, he was also assigned duties working closely with Navy personnel. A Navy commander presented the medal. Billy takes special pride in the award as his Grandfather Walter Tully served as a Navy Diver, his Uncle Charles served in the Navy, and his cousin Bobby Tully is a Chief Petty Officer stationed in Jacksonville.
"This award means a lot to me because I feel that it reflects the military heritage of my family," said Tully. "The fact that it is a Navy award is significant because of my grandfather, uncle and cousin's service in the Navy. I also believe the Tullys have a kindred spirit in the sea and I have always felt a distinct connection to it."
