Traffic Concerns on Highway 267
Written by Keith Blackmar, Public Information Officer, WCSO Wednesday, 01 September 2010 10:42
The Wakulla County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Unit has placed Highway 267 near Wakulla Springs State Park and Camp Indian Springs on the radar assignment list following citizen concerns about speeders along the stretch of road that is posted at 45 miles per hour.
Traffic Unit Captain Billy Jones also requested the WCSO Road Patrol crew give the area extra attention. A traffic complaint received through the Community Traffic Safety Team (CTST) web site, which is part of www.wcso.org, will be addressed by team members at the CTST meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 21. Captain Jones is chairman of the CTST in addition to his duties as a WCSO captain.
The complaint expressed concern over speeders flying through the area from Old Bethel Road to the state park. The stretch of road includes a crosswalk for youths at the YMCA camp as well as a dangerous intersection with Highway 61 which has resulted in a number of traffic fatalities over the years.
“It has been brought to my attention that due to road construction on I-10, 18 wheelers are being routed through our county,” said Captain Jones. “Sheriff Harvey is committed to making our highways safe. Aggressive driving will not be tolerated.”
WCSO patrols plan to contact area trucking interests to make sure that none of the local truckers are speeding in the area. Truckers and other motorists who drive aggressively through the area will be subject to traffic citations.
