The Ice Age Cometh to Wakulla Springs
{sidebar id=3}The Ice Age Cometh. With apologies to playwright Eugene O'Neill, the ice age will be unearthed at Wakulla Springs State Park during April.
Known as the Paleoindian period, archaeologists with the state's Bureau of Archaeological Research plan to investigate an area near the spring's lodge.
The late B. Calvin Jones supervised archaeological investigations there in 1994 and found a large Simpson preform (more than 10,000 years old). A replica is on display near that site. Jim Dunbar, a Wakulla County resident and a senior archaeologist with the state will supervise the National Geographic-funded project. The excavations have to be deep enough to encounter the Paleoindian strata.
Volunteers are needed to help the project in three different areas: Excavating, sifting, recording; Illustration, photography and data entry, and docents who give out information to visitors. The deadline to submit volunteer registration forms is March 27. The forms and further information may be obtained from 2008paleo@gmail.com.
