Small Town Charm in Large Doses at Haskins Peanut Boil and Watermelon Cutting
Lady and Guinn Haskins hosted their annual Peanut Boil and Watermelon Cutting this past Friday, August 29, 2008 at Haskins Littlebig Farm in Woodville. The event was originally scheduled for August 22, but thanks to Tropical Storm Fay, it was moved back a week later than usual.
Friends, customers, and high school classmates (from Guinn's alma mater, Havana High) came out this year to enjoy hot boiled peanuts and slices of cold, sweet watermelon. According to Lady Haskins, owner of The Wakulla Area Times and the Wakulla Area Friendly Little Phone Book, approximately 5 bushels of peanuts were boiled and about 50 watermelons were sliced at this year's gathering. "We had about 200 guests come out for this years' event. This was either the fourth or fifth year we've held it, and everybody seemed to have a good time," she said.
The folks from Ace Hardware in Woodville stopped by and passed drinking water out to anybody who wanted it. "They were worried about the water quality in the area after Tropical Storm Fay caused all the flooding," said Lady. "Their visit was a surprise to us all."
Lady says she and Guinn plan to continue the annual event "as long as folks want to come out and enjoy themselves". "My husband Guinn just enjoys seeing people having a good time," added Lady. "Folks can just relax and visit with each other; they can turn the kids loose and not worry about them. They enjoy seeing all the chickens and pigeons here on the farm."
