Residents of Shell Point learned this past Thursday, March 16, that the site plans approved two weeks ago by the Wakulla County Board of County Commissioners call for the bulldozing of 10 large live oak trees where the parking lot will be.

Shell Point resident David Damon met with the developer, owner and engineers of the Shell Point PUD Friday, March 17, to discuss the possibility of saving the live oak trees.  Elliott Varnum and Associates, Jason Naumann, and property owner George Heaton met with Damon and informed him that the live oak trees in question will be saved.  They also indicated that some of the other palms and cedar trees on the site may be saved, as well, even if it means transplanting them to other parts of the development.

"This is a wonderful example of responsible development," said Damon.  "George Heaton and Jason Naumann should be highly commended for the innovative direction they are taking in this situation.  Hopefully other developers will follow their lead."

"We are thrilled that the owner and developer of the Shell Point property addessed this issue so quickly," said County Commissioner Howard Kessler.  "Their actions show a great sensitivity to the environment; they are truly setting the benchmark for future developments in Wakulla County."

David Damon is planning to establish a board to begin development of a Wakulla County tree ordinance.  The board will include himself, a member of the Wakulla County Chamber of Commerce, a member of the Wakulla County Planning and Zoning Commission, a member of the Iris Garden Club, a member of Keep Wakulla County Beautiful, and a member of the Concerned Citizens of Wakulla.  Damon will make this announcement at the March 20 Board of County Commissioners meeting.
