(L to R) Bob Sheppard, Commander VFW for the State of Florida,
Megan Rollins, Deray Ingram, and John Nelson, Commander District II.
Commander Charles Tully of the Veterans of Foreign
Wars (VFW) Wakulla County Memorial Post 4538 and its Ladies Auxiliary
has a state winner for the Patriots Pen. This years' theme was "Who Are
Today's Patriots".
Megan Rollins, an 8th grader at Riversprings Middle School, first competed against 76 middle school
applicants from Riversprings Middle School and Wakulla Middle
School. Counselors and teachers from both schools assisted the
local VFW post in motivating an unusually large number of applicants in
this year’s competition. The judges, who are all former military
service members, judged Megan's' paper as the best of the best—and the
competition was very keen. In December, her essay was then judged
as the winner at the District II competition, which includes Gadsden,
Hamilton, Jefferson, Leon, Liberty, Madison, Taylor, and Wakulla
counties.
On Saturday, February 4, Megan Rollins represented District II at the State Mid-Winter VFW Conference Patriot's Pen competition at the Radisson Maingate Hotel in Kissimmee. Department of Florida - VFW and State Ladies Auxiliary treated the 23 district winners to a luncheon. Each finalist for state competition received a certificate, cash prize and a Patriot's Pen jacket. At the Awards Celebration Banquet on Saturday night, Megan was announced the winner for the State of Florida. She received a plaque, a $1,000 savings bond from State Commander Robert Shepard and a $500 cash award from the State Ladies Auxiliary. Megan now qualifies to receive an all expense paid trip to Washington, DC. to represent Department of Florida - VFW and join 49 other state Patriot's Pen winners.
Students in grades 6 - 8 throughout the nation compete in the VFW's annual essay competition. Megan Rollins will now be competing nationally against the other state winners for more than $70,000.00 in U.S. savings bonds and an all expense paid trip to Washington D.C. She will be honored with a plaque and $300 Savings Bond at the May 2006 District II Meeting in Monticello.
