Important Info for Paraprofessionals Wishing to Help with Oiled Animals

bird in oil larson from chronicle 200Important changes are being made by Tri-State, FWC, and USFW.  Paraprofessionals that were previously registered with their rehabilitation organizations need to re-register as individuals.

  There will be assignments and opportunities for experienced individuals to work with wildlife and support those working with wildlife based on this registration. It's important that qualified and interested applicants sign-up as soon as possible.  Additional details are forthcoming.

Instructions for registration can be found at this website:  http://www.myfwc.com/OilSpill/OilSpill_Rehab.htm

A paraprofessional is defined as a person who:

  • Either possesses, or works directly under a person possessing an active permit or authorization related to the species to be worked on;

  • Is affiliated with a wildlife organization working within the Wildlife Branch of the Incident Command Structure (ICS), or is a staff member of a wildlife trustee agency;

  • Agrees to work under, and abide by, appropriate planning documents prepared by the Unified Command (such as Site Safety Plan, Incident Action Plan, public affairs requirement, etc.), and

  • Has a working knowledge and experience (at least three months) with the general protocol, procedures and safety hazards associated with working on the species in question.

Anyone who does not qualify as a paraprofessional and is still interested in volunteering may register at www.DeepwaterHorizonResponse.com.

All oiled wildlife calls should be directed to the Wildlife Hotline at 866-557-1401, so recovery/rescue efforts can be coordinated.

It is important that you avoid going to affected areas or handling wildlife until you are part of a coordinated response effort.  Thank you in advance for your assistance and for your willingness to help America's wildlife.
