Written by Amy Godsey, Florida State Meteorologist Tuesday, 10 August 2010 11:05
Summary:
Thunderstorm activity around a low pressure system off the Southwest Florida coast is getting better organized and the low is acquiring tropical characteristics.
The low is located 97 miles southwest of Naples, Florida, or about 65 miles northwest of Key West.
Maximum sustained winds are near 30mph and the storm is moving west-northwest at 5-10mph.
The National Hurricane Center is indicating a 60% chance that the system could become a tropical depression or tropical storm status by Thursday.
Hurricane Hunters are scheduled to investigate the system this afternoon.
This system is currently expected to move inland over the central Gulf Coast near Louisiana Thursday or early Friday.
Impacts to the Florida Gulf coast may include isolated waterspouts or tornadoes, waves of 3-6 feet and an increased threat for rip currents along Florida beaches. Depending on the strength of the system, high winds near the coast may also be possible, beginning tonight.
A tropical low in the central Atlantic Ocean has not become better organized and is not expected to be a threat to land.
