A Few Isolated Strong to Severe Storms Possible This Afternoon and Evening
Written by Alex Lamers, NOAA Wednesday, 22 February 2012 10:36
A quick hitting round of showers and storms will pass over the area this afternoon and evening as some warm, moist air starts to push north from the central and southern Gulf of Mexico.
The rain and embedded thunderstorms should begin approaching the western Florida Panhandle shortly after midday, and spread east through the remainder of the area by the early-mid evening (8-9pm time frame).
A Few Main Points on the Risk of Severe Weather:
Most areas will just see some rain and perhaps a few rumbles of thunder.
A few thunderstorms could be stronger and produce some marginally severe hail (around 1" in diameter) or wind gusts up to around 50-60mph.
The threat of severe weather is fairly isolated. The strongest thunderstorms are expected to be over the Gulf of Mexico and along and south of the Interstate-10 corridor.
