Performance-Based Septic Systems Now Required in Wakulla County
Crawfordville - The Wakulla County Commission last year agreed to require performance-based septic systems countywide for all new construction. These performance-based systems reduce nitrogen, a byproduct of human waste and a main culprit in the deterioration of Florida springs. Such systems can cut levels as much as 70%.
The ordinance has been approved by Department of Community Affairs, has gone through the petition period and is therefore ready for implementation. The ordinance calls for all new systems to reduce nitrogen levels to 10mg/l. It also says that after one year from the approval date that all failing systems will need to be repaired to meet this same standard.
The Wakulla County Health Department regulates the installation of septic systems in our county. The Health Department is providing a “grace period” for the implementation, public education, training of staff and contractors in the area. The Health Department will require that all new septic system applications received after March 1, 2007 must be in alignment with the stricter standards of the new county ordinance.
All previously issued septic permits will be honored until their expiration date.
