Response to Requests to Place FWMA on County Budget
Kudos to the FWMA.
I would like to commend those in our community who choose to volunteer their time to assist with the efforts of the Florida Wild Mammal Association. I too agree that the FWMA has a worthwhile mission and that they fill a void in our community. If you have a great passion for the wildlife in our community, then I encourage each of you to embark upon a fundraising campaign for the FWMA. Such an effort might very well avoid the need to "close the doors" of the FWMA.
In my opinion, the primary responsibility of the local government should first and foremost be to provide for the safety and well being of our citizens (humans beings). For this reason, I vehemently oppose any type of public funding, county or otherwise, for the FWMA. Quite frankly, I would much rather they produce a budget that sufficiently provides for public safety and for the most vulnerable in our community.
If the FWMA is not publicly funded, what is the worst that could happen? If funding for public safety is reduced, what is the worst that could happen?
Personally, I am willing to let a few squirrels, deer and racoons die if it means that our community's public safety budgets are well funded. For this reason, I encourage the Wakulla County Commissioners to refrain from funding the FWMA and to produce a county budget that provides for the basic needs of all Wakulla residents. Please develop a budget that insures life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness for every Wakulla citizen.
For What It Is Worth,
Andy Messer
