St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge to Host 3rd Annual Wildlife Heritage and Outdoors Festival

duck pic.gifGET OUTSIDE at St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge’s Wildlife Heritage and Outdoors Festival on Saturday, Feb. 7, 2009 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.  Not only will you have the opportunity to learn about and join local clubs and organizations, you will get to experience first hand how to throw a hatchet, shoot a black powder rifle, throw a cast net, take wildlife photographs, go hiking and birdwatching and many more activities too numerous to mention. This festival is for people of all ages!  There will be wild animal exhibits, so please leave your pets at home.

The mission of this festival is to reconnect people- children, families, everybody! to nature and wildlife through both historical and present day activities.  There will be plenty of fun for everyone.  Over 30 organizations have been invited, for a complete list you can visit our website at   http://www.fws.gov/saintmarks.

Marks NWR, and SMRA.

Apalachee Audubon:  Interactive display board with pictures, and games.

Cast Net demonstrations:  Tying and casting demonstrations

Small Wooden Boat Building:  Demonstrations on small boat construction.

CCOW (Concerned Citizens of Wakulla, Inc.):  Organization information, membership info. and t-shirts, and coffee.

Division of Forestry:  Smokey Bear, Fire equipment display and educational hands on materials.

Ducks Unlimited:  An exciting educational display and raffle.

Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission:  Ethical Angling, demonstrations and information.

Great Florida Birding Trail (FWC): Publications and information on the Great Florida Birding Trail and birding, GFBT hats and t-shirts for sale.

Hunting Dog Demonstration:  Pointers and Retriever demonstrations.

Jefferson Longrifles:  Primitive campsite for colonial time period, black powder demonstrations, archery, and tomahawk throwing

Mary Brogan Museum of Art and Science:  Information on current exhibits, hands on activities..

Mission San Luis:  Information and hands on activities for children.

Museum of Florida History:  Display of Florida History

National Wild Turkey Federation:  Display of publications, habitat information, bio-facts, turkey calls, calling demonstrations, educational materials, raffle, live turkey and much more.

St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge:  Face painting, free play area, foam target shooting, rod and reel casting.

St. Marks Photo Club:  Great outdoor photo’s of the family.

St. Marks Refuge Association:  Festival Information and SMRA membership table and refuge information, and kids festival fishing.

Wakulla Co. 4-H:  Fun hands on interactive

Sportsman's Warehouse:  GPS optics demonstrations with scopes, binoculars, and viewfinders.

The Wilderness Way:  Self and Assisted Rescue demonstrations.

Youth Turkey Calling Contest:  2 age categories, Poult division age 10 years and under, Jake division 11- 17 years old. Call 925-6121 to pre-register, or sign up at the festival information table.
