logo croppedTallahassee, FL - Due to a budget shortfall and efforts to streamline the overall system, state agencies were tasked with developing a reduction in workforce strategy. That reduction has resulted in a substantial loss of positions, many of which are in the Tallahassee/Big Bend area.  For Gadsden, Leon, and Wakulla counties, government represents the largest industry sector and the decline has created a negative impact in other sectors of our local economy.

In an effort to curb some of the impact related to these mass layoffs along with addressing the needs of the already over 14,000 individuals unemployed in our region, WORKFORCE plus has created the JOBS=PAYCHECKS NOW initiative.  Through the initiative, WORKFORCE plus, along with local partners, will provide customized services to job seekers that will increase their ability to compete for the new jobs being created in the area.

“We believe that businesses thinking about adding a new position will use funds from this program to go ahead and hire that person now, ” said Timothy J. Meenan, Chairman of the WORKFORCE plus Board of Directors.  “WORKFORCE plus is using reserve funds at this crucial time to help prime the pump of employment in our three county region.”

Job seekers participating in the JOBS=PAYCHECKS NOW initiative will be paired with a Job Coach who will help them in developing a realistic and individualized employment plan.  Additionally, the Job Coaches will help them to identify skills currently possessed and research training opportunities available that can increase their chances of gaining successful employment.  Lastly, through this customized approach, each job seeker will be given an opportunity to take part in skills building workshops such as resume building, networking and interviewing, labor market research, to enhance their job search, increase their marketability and provide a strong basis for re-entering the workforce at a faster pace.

Employers who participate in the JOBS=PAYCHECKS NOW initiative are eligible to receive a reimbursement of up to $1,250.00 for every new full-time (32 hours or greater) position created.  This employment reimbursement allows employers to provide on-the-job training to prepare their new hire for successful job retention and extends job seekers an employment opportunity that might not otherwise be available.  All private, non-profit and public sector employers who have not been involved in a layoff in the last six months are eligible to participate.

JOBS=PAYCHECKS NOW is a collaborative partnership made possible by funds from WORKFORCE plus and the state workforce board agency, Workforce Florida, Inc.

“We are committed to supporting innovative strategies that advance our mission of helping Floridians enter, remain and advance in the workforce and JOBS=PAYCHECKS NOW is such an initiative,” said Workforce Florida President/CEO Chris Hart IV.  “With these additional funds, WORKFORCE plus will now have increased resources to assist people who have lost their jobs as a result of layoffs, regardless of whether public or private.”
