Compton Responds to Ahrendt's Letter to the Editor

Publisher, Wakulla.com:

The issues I raised in the letter to the editor concerned Ms. Ahrendt's knowledge base and customer service.  To the reader who did not see my letter, let me summarize.  Ms. Ahrendt was unable to explain the formula used in assessing our taxes, instead she echoed James Burke's explanation.  She does not respond to that challenge, but throws up a smoke screen, which will be addressed.

My second complaint was with Ms. Ahrendt's arrogant attitude and hurtful, caustic remarks.  Ms. Ahrendt was appointed by the governor and is a well paid servant of the citizens of Wakulla County.  We deserve courtesy and respect when we visit that office.  That was not my experience with Ms. Ahrendt.

Ms. Ahrendt implies in her response that my husband and I received favoritism from the previous Property Appraiser.  We never asked Mr. Kilgore for favors, and anyone aware of our history knows that,  nor did we ask Anne Ahrendt or Donnie Sparkman.  In fact, I told her that we did not want any favors, just to understand why our tax bill was nearly $7,000.  Our home is on Harvey Mill Road with nearly seven acres.  We expected a higher tax bill with the rising cost of real estate.

Since moving back to Wakulla County from military service in 1994, we have paid our fair share in property taxes.  Our children went to school here, we live here and we never begrudged this county one dollar.  The appraised value of our property is nearly three times greater than Mr. Ahrendt's Wakulla River front property.  We currently pay three times more in property taxes than Mr. Ahrendt.  I will let you decide who gets the tax break.

In summary, look beyond the political smoke screen and choose experience, knowledge, and courtesy.  Elect Donnie Sparkman, the "people's choice".
