Wakulla Pre-K  News

May 2006

The end of the school year is fast approaching.  Our students and teachers have been very busy.  Ms. Pat and Ms. Susan’s class has been reviewing the readiness skills and so many children have shown much progress.  Ms. Pat and Ms. Susan, Ms. Rene and Ms. Jodie, and Ms. Alice and Ms. Toyia had a special picnic during their April Lapsit for their classes.  The parents really enjoyed this time with their children.

Our students are working hard on the music for graduation.  May 10 is graduation at Sopchoppy Educational Center PreK, and May 11 and 12 are the graduation days for Wakulla Educational Center PreK.  Ms. Linda and Ms. Eunice have seven children graduating.  They are excited to be going to “big school”, but they will be missed.  Ms. Jan, Ms. Amber and Ms. Carolyn’s classroom enjoyed a special presentation during their April Lapsit Parent Program.  A Powerpoint slide show was prepared for the parents.  The presentation included pictures set to music of the entire school year.  Many laughs and tears were shared among the parents.  Parents provided delicious refreshments.

Ms. Joy and Ms. Jane’s class has been observing the beautiful Spring and watching the changes that occur.  The tree outside the lunchroom has blossomed with lovely leaves.  The class has learned much by reading books on spring.  A mother bird has built a nest using some yarn that the class placed outside on a bush.  We are trying to see her babies!  Spring is such a wonderful time of discovery for preschool children.  Ms. Chris and Ms. Dena’s class has celebrated the return of spring by learning about the metamorphosis of butterflies.  They built a butterfly habitat for caterpillars.  They are anxiously awaiting the new butterflies.  Fifteen of their preschool students will graduate.  The changes that the teachers have observed in these children remind them of butterflies, filled with new hope and promise for a wonderful future in kindergarten.

After a busy month of weather research and kite flying, Ms. Martha, Ms. Tonia, and Ms. Susie’s class continue to reach skyward, working hard on readiness skills.  They are also busy with refining fine motor skills as we cut, paste, and color cards and gifts for Mother’s Day.  At the last Lapsit they made stone-age necklaces in keeping with our geology theme.  The year is winding down for the speech students.  They have had so much fun.  They learned a new nursery rhyme each month, practiced speech sounds and found pride in telling the classroom teachers what they wanted using new words.  The speech students are excited to see what next year will bring!  It will be hard to say good-bye to the graduating students but everyone agrees that they are ready for the next step in their education.
