Wakulla Educators Ask Parents to Write Our Legislators about Education Budget Dilemma
From the Publisher: This note was sent home with WMS students on the Leopards team asking parents to please write our legislators about the problems we are facing with the education budget. I have reprinted it here on Wakulla.com so that it can reach a broader audience. Thank you.
News of Note from the Leopards' Den - March 2009
This interim letter is necessary because we have an imporant issue for you to consider.
We are asking you - and any people you know who have a strong opinion about the issue of education - to write the legislature NOW.
Mr. Miller, our Superintendent, met with the faculty and staff recently and spoke at length about the damage that is about to be done to our public schools in Florida. He said we have survived the budget cuts, until now, by dipping into our Reserve Fund. That fund is now almost tapped out.
In addition, the cuts the Florida legislature will be discussing this session, which began March 3, cannot be absorbed by the district without causing losses that could well result in a poorer learning environment for our students. Although nothing will be decided until the Legislature is finished, the cuts could result in both teachers and staff taking pay cuts or losing their jobs. All programs, except core courses, are endangered - both in-school and after-school.
Please help us head off this dilemma. The district website has a link for budget-saving suggestions that anyone can use. It also has a link to the names and addresses of the legislators that represent our county (see both links below). If you are as concerned about the impending budget crisis as we are, the most powerful thing you can do is write them. Mr. Miller assures us that writing, as a voter, is a more powerful weapon than we may realize.
