Wakulla Middle School
May 2005
Wakulla Middle School started the 2005-2006 school year off with some
bright new faces. Angie Gentry is our new eighth grade teacher
and joins Mrs. Madden on the Bobcats team. Mrs. Gentry has taught
many years in our county and we’re fortunate to have her on our
staff. Also joining our winning team as ESE teachers are Sonia
Rosier and DeShawne Hunter. Both are very talented teachers and
bring much experience, which our students are sure to benefit
from. We also welcome Jeff Dutrow and Jessica Mapes. Mr.
Dutrow will join Mrs. Strickland on the sixth grade Cheetahs team and
Mrs. Mapes will takeover as our new technology teacher. Our
guidance department also has an addition. Mr. Mike Steele joins
us as a part-time guidance counselor. Mr. Steele comes to us with
much experience in the guidance field.
Mrs. Daniels would like to thank all the parents who joined the Parent
Teacher Association (PTA) this year. Mrs. Daniels said, “Our
participation continues to grow and we are thankful for that. I
would like to encourage all parents to come to a PTA meeting to see how
much we can accomplish when we work together.” A long-time
principal of Wakulla Middle School, one of the most successful schools
in the state, Mrs. Daniels will be the first to tell you that success
requires team work and dedication.
Ms. Terry Price was selected by the Panhandle Area Educational
Consortium to be a model teacher for their Tuesday Teaching Training
Series. She and her class were videotaped demonstrating reading
strategies in the content area classroom. The module can be
viewed through the ePDC website.
The bands have been very busy this semester. Under the
instruction of band director Laura Hudson and her intern, Nicole
Horton, the students have progressed extremely well. The eighth
graders have played at all the home football games, performed at the
Veteran’s Day program, and are also working toward their winter concert
and performance at the Governor’s Square Mall. The seventh grade
band performed with the eighth graders at the last pep rally and
football game and are also preparing for their winter concert and a
performance at the SEC preschool. The sixth grade band played
their debut concert in November and also performed at Eden
Springs. The jazz band has been preparing for their first concert
in December and also plans to perform out in the community after the
Christmas break. The band fund-raiser was very successful raising
over $4,000.00 thanks to the efforts of motivated students, helpful
parents, and a wonderfully supportive community.
The Wildcat Football Team had another great year and provided many
wonderful fans with some exciting football action. Coach Steele
said, “We have a young team and a lot of great athletes. I’m
looking forward to seeing these young men improve over the next
year. I would like to wish all my 8th grade athletes the best of
luck next year. I think we can look forward to some exciting
football in the future.” Coach Steele would like to thank all the
parents and community for their support and a special thanks to Mrs.
Rita Pouncy and Nikki Perez for their efforts with the football program
and pre-game meals.
The Wildcat Volleyball Team also had a successful year. Their
record was 10-4 and they placed second in the Wakulla Middle School
Tournament held every year at the high school. Thanks to Coach
Young, Coach Dutrow, and all the players for another great year.
Congratulations to our own Coach Price whose cross-country team at the
high school produced two state qualifiers, including his own son Tyler.
Mrs. Daniels is proud to announce that Shelbi Barrow, an 8th grader at
Wakulla Middle School, was nominated for the Prudential Spirit of
Community Award. Mrs. Daniels said, “This award is all about
volunteering in the community. Shelbi is one of our brightest
students and she volunteers several hours a week at Medart
Elementary. We are very proud of Shelbi and hope that she wins
this award. Great job, Shelbi!
The Wakulla Middle School Spirit Club sponsored “Pink about It” day
October 21st in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. We asked
everyone, including faculty and staff, to wear pink to school.
The Spirit Club gathered names of victims and survivors all week to
display on a banner made Friday during exploratory. This banner
included everyone’s name affected by this disease. It was hung in
the cafeteria to honor those who lost the fight and to remind all of us
that we can beat this disease.
A special congratulations goes out to Mrs. Regina Strickland who was
elected our September Teacher of the Month. Mrs. Strickland has
taught at WMS for fourteen years, twelve of those in her current
position as a sixth grade teacher. Mrs. Strickland is certainly
deserving of this award and we’re very fortunate to have her on
our staff.
Wakulla Middle School is off to another successful year. We look
forward to the second semester and continuing to provide the best
education for our students.
