Wakulla Middle School

May 2005

As the school year comes to a close, the students and staff at Wakulla Middle School put the finishing touches on another successful school year.  We’re very proud of our students’ success and the academic accomplishments they have achieved during this past year.

We’re also very proud of the accomplishments many of our teachers have achieved.  Three WMS teachers were selected as officers of the Gamma Eta Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma.  Sandy Byars was selected as President, Karen Amison as Vice-President and Francey Newland as Recording Secretary.  Also, several WMS teachers are serving as committee chairs for the society.  They are Terry Price (Legislative), Laura Hudson (Scholarships), Karen Amison (Programs), Jeri Jump (Hospitality), and Francey Newland (Communications).  In addition to being selected as President, Sandy Byars has also been nominated for a Disneyland Creative Teaching Award.

In the classroom, Mrs. Golden’s math students are experiencing the real world of banking through a “mock bank” in their classroom.  In her class, each eighth grade student now has a WMS Bank checking account, checkbook, and salary, all fake, of course.  Mrs. Tina Langston from Wakulla Bank visited the class and taught them even more about checking accounts.  Students will soon be able to “shop” with their earnings and then write checks for their purchases.

In our technology education class, Mr. Pace has begun the first ever video game club.  In this club, students learn to design and program video games.  This coincides with the entrepreneurial phase of our technology education class where students apply what they’ve learned to form their own class business.  Students meet twice a week after school.

The Wakulla Middle School band has been very busy this spring.  In February, nineteen students participated in the Florida Bandmaster’s Solo and Ensemble District Festival.  Seventeen of our students received the highest rating of Superior and two received the second highest rating of Excellent.  The students played exceptionally well and are to be commended for their fine performance.  The seventh and eighth grade bands marched in the Rotary Parade and the sixth grade band entertained the crowd at the Crawfordville Spring Festival.  The Jazz Band performed for the students at Medart and Crawfordville Elementary Schools.  The Spring Concert for the seventh and eighth grade bands was held on April 19th and the sixth grade band concert will be on May 9th.  The eighth grade band will play next for Medart and Crawfordville Elementary Schools on May 11th and the sixth grade band will play for the WEC preschool on May 5th.

On the sports front, the Wildcat softball team finished the season with a record of 6-2.  Congratulations to Coach Jump, Coach Walker, Coach Hudson and the team for another successful year.  Coach Rod Bennett and the Wildcat track team completed another successful season.  The team competed in both of Maclay’s track meets as well as other competitions.  The Wildcats placed fourth and fifth respectively in the meets.

And last but not least, special congratulations go out to Mrs. Debra Randle and Mrs. Paula Piland.  Mrs. Randle was selected Teacher of the Month for March and Mrs. Piland was selected Employee of the Month for March as well.  Both are treasured employees and contribute greatly to the success of our school.

As we finish out the school year, we look forward to continuing the high standards of education in our school as we welcome our incoming sixth graders as well as our returning students.  We will certainly miss our exiting eighth graders and wish them well as they continue their education at the high school.
